Default Extinction Rebellion - Revolt against Climate Change and Species Collapse

Founded by 100 scientists in the UK in 2018 (echo of the anti-nuclear 'Committee of 100') Extinction Rebellion blends scientists, pagans, middle class youth and 'other concerned people' into a movement that threatens to become far more influential than would be suggested by its very wishy washy objectives -

"Extinction Rebellion's website states its aims as:[11][1][12]

    • "The Government must tell the truth about the climate and wider ecological emergency, reverse inconsistent policies and work alongside the media to communicate with citizens.
    • The Government must enact legally binding policy measures to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2025 and to reduce consumption levels.
    • A national Citizens' assembly to oversee the changes, as part of creating a democracy fit for purpose."

The UK police have been obliging the movement by carry out the mass arrests which are a tactic of Extinction Rebellion.
Ongoing protests at Dublin and in London, today - in London it is the fourth day of protests. O'Connell Street and Heathrow effected.

A lot of very interesting strands of action and thinking under this broad rainbow coloured umbrella.

Well meaning no doubt, but if only 100 academics will sign on, it says something about the reception their tactics are receiving. I note the Wiki page refers to criticism they have received from other activists.
I think the 16 y.o. Swedish schoolgirl Greta Thunberg, and her ilk, will be more effective in the long run. Anger is not a policy. Persuasion works better. Whither Greenpeace?

100 was the size of the start up committee. This movement has grown exponentially. I see both in my day to day contacts and in looking at this movement that it is an elite driven movement, with young people who are scientists and also very socially privileged young people coming together to save 'their' planet. It is not to be expected that they will want a social revolution to be the way forward. They are driven by understanding there is a massive threat to their world. One of the leaders compared himself with Ghandi and Mandela, both 'upper crust' leaders. But Ghandi and Mandela were part of mass movements that were peopled largely by the poor, deprived and oppressed. So how is this rebellion, with it's logo that its adopters seem chillingly unaware has a resemblance to emblems of the far right, going to turn out ?

Thunberg is different - she is for taxing the rich and controlling consumer capitalism (or ending it??). There are turbulent waters out there in all classes - the angry reaction to multimillion corporate donations for rebuilding Notre Dame compared with lack of care for people and the natural environment. The plastics are too evident - I was walking on a small estuarial beach yesterday and in parts there was a plastic bottle detritus layer of several feet deep. The damage is not diminishing with all the talk, it is accelerating - habitat depletion and contamination, climate change - affect and threaten all classes - there is a cross class interest in responding to this globally - but ultimately the ruling monied elite will view the starving millions as dispensible, so there are bound to be big schisms and splits in the movement that initially seems all peace and light.

Not only the logo - their avoidance of class and inequality as an issue, fascination with paganism, love of hiking and the healthy life are a fit between this movement and nazism in its early stages.
