A good first step might be to introduce a tax on vacant property. Wash DC assesses another 5-10% above normal on vacant and blighted.

These are sensible proposals and I support them, but the property lobby and their vested interests are very strong in Ireland. It has already caused a massive bubble and burst and may do so again.

Hard left wingers and young idealists seem to constantly forget that gubbmints have no money of their own. Only that which they take from de peeps.
I have no idea how many or few, vacant properties there are in Ireland, but I'm pretty sure the gummint doesn't have the money to buy them all at fair market value, much less rehabilitate them also, without taxing the peeps more.
With vacant property, the land is often worth more than the structure, particularly in urban areas. Supposedly there are 10,000 homeless in the state. It would be a relatively easy matter to build housing for them in say the suburbs of Kinnegad, but many of the don't want to live in Kinnegad....or its suburbs.
Inefficient public use of land, property, housing etc. costs money, just like overuse of health benefits to prevent them being taken away.
I agree that the government should try to house the homeless, but on the government's terms, not those of the homeless, otherwise it would be open to widespread scamming.

I don't suggest buying them at inflated market prices.

Inflated or not, market prices are market prices, and with CPOs its the courts that ultimately decide. You appear to be endorsing robbing people.

Landlords and capitalists rob people every day. It's called profit.

A market price of 100 suddenly becomes 500 over five years when the CPI inflation is only a few % per year.

Tis almost as though the market is a fraud!

I don't have an issue with a genuine entrepreneur making a proft

However, profits by real estate landlords in Orieland are often clearly fraudulent, due to the proven corrupt nature of the rentier system and the landbanks held by 'developers' linked to provably corrupt politicians in Oireland.

    'tis obvious.

Profit is legal, robbery is not.

Change the laws around CPO. Property ownership and rights in Ireland are subject to the common good and social justice as per the constitution.

The common good and principles of social justice demand that action is taken to fix the housing crisis - below market price CPO can be part of that.

So there you go... Perfectly legal.
