    Made it to the US...........

Dublin’s Housing Crisis Reaches a Boiling Point

When activists occupied a long-vacant building, the police response seemed to confirm suspicion that the state is siding with landlords.

Drew Harris's only problem with it seems to be that he says they should have been wearing helmets too.

    Points of concern:
Bailiffs and Public Order / ERU police working as a team against protestors
Masked police used to intimidate a peaceful demonstration
No attempt to negotiate or ask people to leave the house
Masked bailiff thugs with no ID
Van used that is ex Manchester Police vehicle
Allegation made on RTE that 'former' Northern paramilitaries involved.
Yet again, a baton blow to the head of a protestor - banned in most countries as it is life-threatening.

Whether or not Drew Harris actually knew about this is hardly the point. His presence as Garda Commmissioner gives the nod to it. It's a recipe for disaster.

Una Mullally's article in the IT is good, but she doesn't get that the FG/FF government is actively opposed to social housing and has no plans for homeless people except cracking a few over the head to keep the rest quiet.

I wouldn't trust everything you read on p.ie but in this case they are most likely correct, the owner went to court to get them out. None of that answers or addresses C. Flower's concerns as outlined above, however.

Honest question; do you think that the police would respond so quickly if you rang them about people interfering with your vehicle ?

RTE reports that a photograph of a Guard involved has circulated in the internet, with 13,000 views and 600 comments. Drew Harris has said that there is a criminal investigation of this under way in relation if I understood correctly to threats. Drew Harris's father was a police officer who was killed/assassinated in the North of Ireland. Understandable that he should feel strongly about threats to police/ Guards, but the climate here is somewhat different to that place and time. I also recall that a political activist (Eirigi member?) spent a good amount of time in Maghera jail as a consequence of having photographs of police on his laptop, his defence being that he took photographs of demonstrations for the record of what took place. I'm not sure that Irish law is quite the same as UK law on this matter.

This kind of investigation may of may not have a chilling effect on discussion of Drew Harris's role and appointment. I trust not.

I have no idea of any or all of the people present were aware of any court order. And there was certainly no order banning a protest outside. Squats organised by the same group have ended peacefully in the last couple of weeks: they left when asked.

RTE has deleted from the RTE Player John Connors interview on the Late Late Show in which he called Guards and bailiffs scum, and alleged Northern paramilitary involvement - the Sunday Times led with this story on their front page today.

Taken from Saturdays Irish Times, the thugs involved in evictions are often moonlighting serving members of the Defense Forces and/or the Gardaí.

Misleading headline. He didn't quite say that, and is getting a lashing on Twitter for comments he didn't actually make.
