Default Mexican Election July 1st, 2018

Time to start a tread I think . The long standing leftist AMLO and his new MORENA parties (+allies like the Labour Party/PT) continues his amazing campaign threatening to sweep away the entire old party system including his own former party PRD which did a sort of Irish Labour (but worse) and backed the right wing neo-liberal PAN candidate . Though the entire system very corrupt in what now can probably be described an ultra capitalist country.
A question in my mind , will AMLO survive the campaign ? (90 candidates had been murdered by May 11th)

Todays update from RNN briefly touches on the complexities of Mexico like the relationship between oligarchy and state . So it is ultra-capitalist in the huge drugs crime but odd in a 'socialism for the rich' sense .
The main threat to AMLO is seen as fraud for now https://therealnews.com/stories/mexi...-are-the-polls

Upbeat analysis. Myself I would be worried that the 'establishment' will now move beyond mere shenanigans https://therealnews.com/stories/mexi...tist-candidate

Much in the same vein. A bit more detail on the political murders etc . A final report is due before July 1st https://therealnews.com/stories/left...untable-margin

And kind of stating the obvious and much more pessimistic (from May) https://www.jacobinmag.com/2018/05/l...mlo-repression

Having overdone the pessimism last time, a very 50/50 analysis on the one hand a diluted populist left on the other, well you have to stay optimistic in the face of ultra-capitalism/out of control crime https://www.jacobinmag.com/2018/06/m...xico-elections

AMLO wins in a landslide as predicted, good news but problem he has to wait to December 1st to take office . Just trying to get the violence and corruption under control will be their huge priority . I had no idea they would have to wait so long

His NEW party MORENA + allies (Labour party and a social conservative one) are also on course to win a landslide in the Lower chamber and a majority in the Senate and maybe a majority of state governorships ?

Lengthy analysis from 2 CEPR election observers https://therealnews.com/stories/mexi...-up-to-the-u-s
The counting will go on all week, so potential for fraud still exists esp at legislative and state levels . I dont understand what the situation is in Mexico city , there is a new Morena mayor but from what the guy was saying the ruling PRI 'stole' the state level election last year

CEPR is a US based 'progressive' (left leaning in the old social liberal tradition) think tank , Mark Weisbrot who wrote many Guardian pieces being their most well known head AFAIK

From Mexico itself the one site in English that sounds 'independent' https://mexiconewsdaily.com/
Other Media links (mostly oligarchy to establishment mouthpieces by looks, sometimes with a sort of Indo style hyper-criticality which neo-liberalism part learnt from the far left perhaps)

Default Maidir Le: Mexican Election July 1st, 2018

Tough business! 132 Mexican "politicians" (48 candidates + 84 election workers), killed during campaign.

Judging by the lack of interest shown by the US left and left leaning video news sites TRNN (Real News) and Democracy Now, people are (likely wisely) withholding judgement on Mexico's new president AMLO and his party MORENA (who finally took power on Saturday after a 5 month wait). Already some worrying signs of a softness that may lead to failure. However AMLO and his party face a genuinely very difficult task as this article points out https://www.jacobinmag.com/2018/12/m...uration-morena

And BBC world service's special for what it's worth (in general seems to be a bit more balanced than the domestic Beeb anyhow, whatever's going on )
Apart from the MORENA woman who got little time, the 2 Mexicans are neo-libs or worse. An Obama sidekick and a Guardian correspondent fill out the discussion so this one not so good

Ditched the Yankee Presidential plane. Makes for good headlines........but that's about it. Can't really go buy an Embraer from Bolsonaro. Maybe an Bombardier from Trudeau?

Ok reaction was just a bit slow from the US left/ish media outlets. Real News headline maybe getting the wrong end of the stick as I thought people were aware of the difficult situation . Of course there will always be some with unrealistic expectations I guess . Real News usually being soberer , but good news a bit rare these days of course . A parallel with Lula's mistake in bring in corrupt 'centrist' politicians in Brasil leading to disaster being wisely pointed out so I'll blame a sleepy editor for the headline
