The thread title is about as ludicrous as the 'David Bowie was a Nazi playboy' thread title.

warnings of more damage when the snow becomes water

Streams and rivers will surge to flood levels due to huge melting snow volumes as warnings were again issued over the threat of tidal flooding from Dundalk and Dublin to Cork and Limerick.

Historically there has been serious flooding after snowfall in Ireland. There is a lot of snow sitting on hill tops right now. Tidal surges are a given at the moment. What happens will depend on the speed of the thaw about which the Met man said yesterday "we have no idea". The best event a nice slow thaw, the worst, a downpour of rain bringing the lot down. Not only coastal towns but all river valley areas are at risk.

Lighten up,Pluralist, nobody has died. However it is of note that the Gardai felt the need to be transported into Jobstown in army vehicles. Lidl was pretty well demolished. The driver attempting to open the safe by attacking it with the digger bucket had a deft and experienced touch but was much more in-your-face than the regular white collar types who rob us.

True on the white collar types but be under no illusions those lads robbing and looting would have no qualms robbing and kicking the ***** out of any of us if we met them on the street.

It is for real presumably. Them East coasters are not used to that sort of stuff. We South West coasters are.

Good to see the army being used. I have always felt their role should be expanded to act as a support service for occasions like this.

OTOH, if you design, build and occupy poorish quality housing, lacking proper social infrastructure, you get the problems the army had to help sort out in Jobstown.

Don't know about the random people with a bag full of groceries who were picked up by the Guards. I certainly wouldnt want to stand between the digger driver and a safe.

Neap / spring tides? The thaw seems to have been nice and slow with no major flooding. Im in favour of the defence forces being used for weather related crises. They are the only people we have who are trained to do it. The gardai theoretically are here to keep the peace.

I agree with some of the comments above. The reasons people descend to this miserable level of existence are clear, but people also have to give themselves a leg up too. We've all been unemployed and in poverty at some stage but this level of crime is miserable, it's still dangerous behaviour. I am not surprised the Gardai called in the Army. It was probably safer than baton-charging the whole area like they did to the students years ago, and probably a smarter move too which resulted in less heads being cracked open.

We cannot just let the lads at it because Lidl don't recognise Unions and calling in the Army looks heavy-handed. If anything, it was less heavy handed than the riot police themselves.

AFAIK, the army was called on to get the guards to the Lidl shop, they had tried with a garda jeep but nogo.

Again, AFAIK the army cannot be called in to assist in the actual management of a potentially criminal situation such as jobstown. I know, for ex., that the navy, who drive the customs boat on the drug sniffing, are not able to arrest any one, there are customs men aboard.

I'm no big fan of the Gardaí but in fairness some of those buckos in this country have it handy. Can you imagine the French or Spanish police... Heads would be cracked... No fear. The Guards are half afraid in those situations.
