Default School teacher/TD wants to ban chlildren under 14 from the internet

"A new law that would fine parents for allowing their children own mobile phones with unrestricted access to the internet has been proposed by the chairman [Jim Daly] of the Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs."

    https://www.rte.ie/news/2017/0510/87...daly-internet/

Just another primary school teacher/TD out of his depth, like the primary school teacher/TD Taoiseach, the secondary school teacher/TD Minister for Finance, the secondary school teacher/TD leader of FF, the school teacher TD leader of Labour, the third level teacher leader of the Greens.

This bozo considers that it should be an offence for parents to allow children under 14 to own devices with full internet access and wants to fine retailers too.

Fine Gael and its association with mobile phones is rather unfortunate to say the least. This appears no different.

Could just not buy kids smartphones before they reach 14...I did not get a Nokia until I was 13.

Hard to believe how much money parents waste on these things. Generally stupid laws in Ireland will not be obeyed anyways...

School teachers have loads of free time to canvass for votes while ordinary people are working. Some get their jobs held open for them while they are in the Dail too.

First point is anti-teacher prejudice and forgets that teachers have many responsibilities outside of class-room working hours.

Second point is an anomaly which should have been corrected a long time ago.

Like running for political office? I suppose they need the four or so months holidays each year because they work so hard? Approximately 26% of the previous Oireachtas were teachers and as a group they are massively overrepresented with respect to their numbers in the general population. Ordinary people do not have the same paid holidays as teachers. They cannot afford to run for the Dail and therefore Irish politics becomes infested with the gombeen class epitomised by Kenny, Noonan, Martin and Howlin. This is not anti-teacher prejudice. I just believe in a fair and open democracy.

    A lot of things should.

They also have lots of ex pupils and parents of ex pupils who will likely give them s preference above someone else

I take the point regarding teachers being over represented but kids should not have smart devices and unlimited access to the Internet. At best give then dial up like we had.

But on a serious note, children are developing unrealistic expectations with the fake virtual world of instagram and Facebook. In an era where mental illness is already prevalent it will get worse. The thing is adults are as bad and it sounds impossible to police.

There definitely should be a debate about Internet accessibility for children.

That probably won't solve anything and dial-up was metered in that it had to be paid for by minute or by unit. Most internet access packages are flat rate.

This is the problem. It is a complex one and it doesn't have simple solutions. Having people of limited intellect trying to solve it will only end up in a mess like the Irish Water tax scam.

There definitely should be a debate about Internet accessibility for children.
The parents should be there and should teach their kids about reasonable internet usage. Another aspect is that kids will generally find a way around dimwitted "solutions" by the gang of village idiots on tour in the Dail.

It is possible to identify the age group of a user from their social network and call activity. However that might upset the happy-clappies who waffle about data privacy and don't understand that people and their activitiy are commodities on the internet.

Personal access to the internet by mobile device is massive cultural shift. Unrestricted access has its risks and dangers but is better than access restricted by eejits in the interests of their idea of social control.

Ever notice that it is always the school teacher/TDs that want to enforce such restrictions as if they had mentally never left the classroom? It is rarely the technologists who propose them.

So the internet becomes the ''forbidden fruit'' for our youth? Wonder what the RC Church view is on the matter?
