Default Apollo House - NAMA buiding seized to house the homeless

Don't have links because I'm on phone but a Nama building has been seized in Dublin by activists in order to house the homeless.

It has - looks as if Right to Change and Damien Dempsey and Glen Hansard are involved - a former Department of Social Protection building at Tara Street - Nama'd and empty.

I'm 100% with this. Nobody should be dying of cold on the streets. It is happening all over the country, hardly even being reported.

The building in Dublin is next to Hawkins House. "Home Sweet Home" is a project of the Irish Housing Network, which is a grouping of housing action groups. They are looking for practical help of all kinds at this building, which they seem to have secured for homeless people to use.

A young homeless woman died in Limerick a couple of weeks back in the cold weather, sleeping under the stairs of a derelict building.

The occupiers have been served notice to vacate the building. Almost 45k has been raised online so far.

Just watching video of new mattresses being delivered. I trust they are dealing with fire safety too - no locked emergency exits, fire drill, fire buckets etc.

This is something we need to be able to do, and do well - a lot of people are volunteering to help, which is a good start.

Can we start a single thread on Apollo House?

It seems to be an important outlet for people's disgust and revulsion at the cruelty of Fine Gael's housing policies in particular.

It could also be important in terms of the alliances made when radicalising people, in Dublin at any rate, in the run up to the next election.

Good idea, moved relevant posts to a thread of its own.

I wonder if other groups will follow their lead and sieze other buildings around the country.

This group is assembling know-how and a team that can deal with the issues involved. Being able to learn from them should make it easier for other groups to get up and running.

Bastards...don't even bother to conceal their bias anymore. This event takes mr back. My first ever demonstration was outside Centre Point in London. A building which got planning permission by incorporating 36 flats along with offices. It was kept empty for years while the owners built other blocks ...also empty. Then it was squatted. 1973...and here we go again.

I would suggest to the people in Apollo house that if they are made to leave, they should proceed to occupy the Headquarters of AIB and/or Bank of Ireland in the same fashion. Both those outfits have questions to answer about how the homeless crisis came about.
