Default UK Tory leadership contest - First woman since Thatcher?

With the elimination today of Michael Gove from the contest for the top job among the Tories, it looks like the U.K. is about to have their first female PM since Margaret Thatcher. And what a success that was!

In the second round of voting, May scooped up 199 votes, Leadsom had 84 and Gove was knocked out with 46. The choice means that the next British prime minister is guaranteed to be a woman, the second after Margaret Thatcher. The result is due to be declared on 9 September.

I wonder how Boris (Et tu, Brute!) Johnson is feeling now.

May looks a strong frontrunner at this point, and came out relatively unscathed from Ken Clarke's bitching about the candidates.

It's notable that, despite her having been on the Remain side in the referendum, it's May who's playing hardball with the fate of those EU migrants currently living in the UK.

But Theresa May and her team at the Home Office have now suggested that it would not be a given that EU national could remain in the UK after Article 50 negotiations conclude.

Immigration Minister James Brokenshire said today it would be “unwise” to guarantee EU nationals living in the UK assurances they could stay without UK nationals abroad getting the same assurances.

Mr Brokenshire was subjected to shouts of “Where's Theresa?” as he addressed the House of Commons on Monday.

Ms May has said that whether EU nationals living in Britain could stay would be a factor in Brexit negotiations.

    What a scenario!

May's election platform includes spending a whole lot more on nukes, does it not ?

She certainly does come on as a Thatcher Mark 2, wrapping herself in the old Imperial flag. The racism is a new factor. Thatcher focused mainly on hating the working class.

So, it's Teresa May, who looks and sounds like a Thatcher impressionist.

I don't think this is a reasonable assessment at all. I suggest that you read the Guardian profile of May from a few years' back. May's driving motivation is a dislike of old boy networks. Thatcher preached meritocracy but in practice wanted to become one of the lads and surrounded herself with toffs although herself from a comparatively humble background.

May went forward with the CSA inquiry against (I'd guess) opposition within the Cabinet. This is to her credit.
