    Default Budget 2017

Listen up! Donnelly on the first stage of the budgetary process for 2017, which opened in the Dail yesterday when the base economic assumptions which will be sent to the EU were approved, with no Government Ministers present, no opportunity for questions, on a paper given to TDs the previous day.

Disgraceful. What is so surprising is the culture of impunity despite the TV cameras. And the Minister whingeing to the Ceann Comhairle....Referee!

Am I right in saying that the same people complaining about the lack of Ministers in the Dail, are also complaining about the slow pace of government negotiations?

Just heard Simon Coveney say that we should not be complaining that FG largesse will push house prices up --- because the houses have not yet been built - and the increased prices will help get them built.

This is a grant to banks and builders, not to people who need homes.

The help to buy plan may be vulnerable to a constitutional challenge as it is clearly interfering with property rights of owners of second hand homes, is discriminatory

This help to buy scheme is open to constitutional challenge as it interferes with property rights as it discriminates between home owners. It would fail the "common good" test.

The most striking thing about the Budget debate and process was the lack of sovereignty of the House in respect of 96% of revenue due to the Fiscal Treaty. Hence the tittle tattle in the media -FG stepped out, FF stepped in again, Ross stepped out again at Mick “Squireen” Noonan's Ball

Very good speech. Thanks for posting. Also notable was the absence of deputies, no doubt in the bar back slapping each other over the new pay increases. A farce is right.

I didn't see it but someone told me not a word about the increases for TDs and Ministers on Prime Time last night. Pearse Doherty even made no comment on it. Looks like they know this Dáil won't run its course so get in the pay increases now. Once again the joke is on the citizen...the ash plant is too good for them....

This seems to be the main topic of conversation on the street.

Usually the political leech class rides out this particular storm, but there is some talk about them not taking the increase this time.
