    from the Times

But it is in the world’s poorest country – the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where Glencore acquired an interest in major copper mines – that Glencore’s history is revealed in greatest detail through the leaked documents. Over the years, investigators have tried to piece together the full extent of the relationship between Glencore and Daniel Gertler, an Israeli businessman with friends in high places in the DRC, who helped Glencore negotiate access to the sprawling Katanga mine. The new revelations, unearthed in more than a thousand pages of documents, set out how Glencore provided a $45 million loan to a Gertler-controlled company after he helped Glencore strike a deal for the mine with DRC officials.

The leaked files provide the most detailed evidence yet of the behind-the-scenes lobbying and the money flows that helped Katanga, in which Glencore was just a shareholder at the time, to acquire mining licences. The files also raise questions about how Katanga, which was later taken over by Glencore, managed to pay a price that critics have viewed as less than the licences’ real value.

    a teaser

The files contain information on the affairs of AIB’s offshore operation, some of Ireland’s wealthiest businessmen and most prominent businesses, celebrities from the arts world, and even an Irish priest who played a role in offshore holding companies linked to valuable assets. The data also contains new information on the role played by Ireland in structures that allow some of the world’s most profitable corporations significantly reduce their tax bills. Reports on these issues will be published by The Irish Times over the coming week.

"It's a faacking plot by those euroweenies" Funny. But to the best of my recall the Consortium of Journalists was getting a leg up from Soros.

It may be agenda driven, but it is still very good to get a small glimpse of how tax is avoided globally.

We can trust the UK and Irish press to turn it into a common or garden celebrity hunt but what is really at stake is the existence of States, which depend on taxation (or used to) to provide services. The way things are going is total privatisation and a gutted state, and with that, gutted democracy.

Süddeutsche Zeitung is the big name investigators, that was sure to wind up the Brexiteers.

Gutted Democracy, that's a fact and it's why the electoral world is in turmoil.

The supposed centrists, that once nurtured the welfare state that took care of the populace from cradle to grave, are in rank shape because they bought hook line and sinker into the Globalised World of anything goes that the Corporate World wants.

The Centrists are now blindly invested in a system that has captured them, their economies and their political direction. The electorate are just the chumps that are supposed to come out every few years to rubber stamp the supposed good guy centrists.

Ye can't slap people in the face and retain their faith in you. People have nowhere to turn to bar the chancers with their spiel about rebuilding the past.

    Apple

The world's most profitable firm has a secretive new structure that would enable it to continue avoiding billions in taxes, the Paradise Papers show.

They reveal how Apple sidestepped a 2013 crackdown on its controversial Irish tax practices by actively shopping around for a tax haven.

It then moved the firm holding most of its untaxed offshore cash, now $252bn, to the Channel Island of Jersey.
