Default Zimbabwe facing famine; Mugabe declares state of disaster

Having spent a month holidaying with family in Dubai, Mugabe has only now raised the alarm on possible famine, a disaster that was predictable for some time. It seems the reason for the declaration now is to enable aid agencies to draw up plans and finance the import of food.

"Zimbabwe is facing a potential famine, as President Mugabe declared a state of disaster yesterday.
The president, 91, who has recently returned from holiday, warned that Zimbabwe was suffering its driest weather on record after the rainy season came two months late, devastating crops.
Saviour Kasukuwere, the local government minister, said that 2.4 million people — 26 per cent of the population — were “food insecure”, that boreholes had dried up and cattle were dying."
