The LE Roisin exercised Ireland's sovereign rights over the craggy outcrop in a "showing the flag" patrol.

The rock lies 230 nautical miles northwest of Bloody Foreland in Co Donegal.

One of his passports turned up in the murder of Versace! Bates certainly lived a swashbucklers life!

We could rename Rockall ,Fockall because there is nothing on it!

This was always going to happen at some stage, as discussed waaayy back on this thread. The fisheries and marine resources around Rockall are of immense value and there are also military implications.

Background to this move ? If it is genuinely coming from the Scots - fisheries in Scotland have been under pressue within the EU and it is the one issue on which the SNP is at a disadvantage in terms of Brexit. A show of strength right now is flag waving over the fisheries and it's hardly accidental that its coming now. The SNP wants to go again at an Independence vote. However, if it thinks it can do independence outside the EU, it must be looking at Iceland as a model, and Iceland has defended its natural resources robustly.

As usual, I'm sitting tight here, well hunkered down in my rocky maritine home and will do my best to defend it, but there are so much an Admin can do......

Very frustrating that Irish governments - and the agreement of 2013 - essentially sold out Ireland's active legal claim to Rockall. If the claim was so puckah - why did they need to send as SAS man to squat on it ?

If we are to look at the legal status of this or that - Ireland in the GFA withdrew its territorial claim to any part of this island, north and south, and in legal terms, Rosslare port (and possibly others) is owned by the UK.

Ireland appears to have relied on both the GFA and British-Irish membership of the EU to be permanent.

That would be an unusual interpretation of the GFA. It was essentially about articles 2 and 3 and the claim to the North. As Rockall is nearer to Ireland (ROI) than Scotland, it is Irish. This does seem to be the Scots trying to throw their weight around on the world stage to differentiate themselves from the rest of the UK.

    That is factually incorrect.

Rockall is situated in a remote part of the North Atlantic and is about 160 nautical miles west of the Scottish islands of St. Kilda and 230 nautical miles to the north-west of Donegal.
Also Ireland has never claimed sovereignty. The British position is that it is part of Scotland.

Irish Fishing representatives say that it was pretty much handed over to Britain in 2013. Gilmore signed the agreement.
