I'm not sure if correct, but someone on RTE radio yesterday said they were in a recreation centre, and desperate to have a home to go to.

The funeral took place today of one of the two families who died in the fire.

Willie Lynch and Tara Lynch, who was pregnant, were buried along with their two children, Jodie and Kelsey Lynch, aged 9 and 4, and Willie's brother, John.

The surviving family members are being put to live by DLR County Council in an unserviced car park next to one of their work depots.

    Appalling beyond belief.

Dogs would not be treated like this.

    More children's funerals today.

Has anyone seen any reports about an enquiry into the fire ?

One obvious point to examine is that travellers halting sites provided by local authorities are designed to much lower space and construction standards than accommodation for settled people.

Not only travellers get put in those shacks. I came across a severely mentally disabled woman in County Cork who was living on her own in one of these things.

Enda Kenny phoned residents objecting to an emergency halting site in Rockville Drive yesterday. Within hours, DLR Council decided to relocate it to a car park in Ballyogan.

They're fixing to put more people into them.

Fire standards of this modular housing need to be seriously questioned.

The Independent says that a Fire Services and Garda investigation has said that the fire was accidental

The source also said there was no evidence to back up reports that a fire burning on the site earlier that evening could have been linked to the blaze, and investigators have ruled out foul play.

The investigation is being conducted by Dublin fire services and gardai in Dun Laoghaire, who will be preparing a report for the Dublin County Coroner. Inquests are expected to be held into the deaths of the 10 victims of the tragedy in the coming months.

The fire had already ripped through one prefab on the halting site at Glenamuck Road South when the alarm was raised at 4.24am on Saturday morning, on October 10. It quickly spread to surrounding units.
This photograph shows the total lack of fire separation between the units. If it had been windier, there could easily have been more deaths. The Travellers should be having their own independent report.

"The days of Travellers are over". This from a Dublin politician, John Gilligan, speaking on Sean O'Rourke's programme.

Traveller Group Reps walked out of a Dublin Castle meeting on housing yesterday and I can see why.

The Dail will discuss and vote on today Traveller ethnicity.

Appalling situation for the Carrickmines families moved to the Ballyogan car park

Being charged rent for living in a car park. Told they only have 5 months there. Suggested to them that they should move back to the site where their families died.

No proper heating - again, clearly a fire hazard as ad hoc measures are likely.

I'm writing something longer on this, but the situation at Dundalk is a very serious attack on human rights and not only Travellers should be concerned.

January 14th, with only 2 days notice of eviction, Dundalk County Council backed up by an armed Garda unit began to evict families. Some vans/homes were impounded. The families did not want to go and did not want to leave the site. No alternative accommodation was provided in spite of an initial belief from the families that there would be some help.

Louth County Council told them to go and get settled rental accommodation - simply not available, even if they wanted it.

In freezing weather, families with children were put out on the road.

A new mother who left hospital during the week was given one night's B and B with her baby.

Families were subsequently told by Louth County Council to put their children in care and declare themselves homeless - this would mean they would lose any benefits as they would have no address, and be threatened with permanent loss of their children.

All this took place on the pretext of fire safety - even though Government guidance on post-Carrickmines inspections was that they should not be used as a pretext to reduce facilities.

Travellers believe that work to make the site safe could be carried out while they are living on the site.

Louth County Council's actions and the involvement of armed Gardai are an indication of an attitude (contrary to law and to the constitution) that Travellers do not have rights as families. The actions amount to an attempt at forced settlement of Travellers.

It is high time that Traveller ethnicity and rights to nomadism, which they exercised for thousands of years and which were stamped on by FF and FG during the boom years, are reasserted and defended.

There is a degree of brutality and ruthlessness on show from LCC that is utterly shocking.

Over 100 Travellers demonstrated outside Louth County Council offices lunchtime today.

PW I am not convinced about the ethnicity thing, but apart from that I agree with you 100%.

Local authorities have behaved appallingly towards travellers. Dun Laoghaire capitulated to illegal obstruction tactics, and Louth have gone "one better" with this new low.

I'm not hung up personally on whether you call the Traveller's situation ethnic or not, what I am sure of is that they are culturally nomadic for very many generations, and that world over, forcing nomadic people to settle when this is not their wish is disastrous for them: alcoholism, depression, high suicide rates, loss of employment, loss of skills. Most of the research is in Africa, but you can see it in Australia, and the US.

11 people died in the fire in Carrickmines, men, women and children. They died in a site laid out and provided by Dunlaoighaire Rathdown County Council, due to totally unsafe conditions there. Two children were orphaned,
Within days, the site was cleared, leaving no opportunity for independent investigation and action against the Council.

Government told Councils to carry out inspections of all their halting sites - but not to use these inspections to reduce Traveller facilities.

Against Gov. guidance, Louth County Council used this process to attempt to close down a site which has been used for decades by Travellers. There is no other site by Louth. Louth has failed to draw down money offered by central Government.

Now, Louth County Council is carrying out a totalitarian campaign against the evicted families - 70 people - evicted using armed police, are being threatened with complete loss of social benefits, homelessness and loss of their children to social services. The Council has left them on the side of the road, or in B and Bs. The law requires Councils to provide Traveller specific accommodation.

It is unspeakable and a disgrace that it appears only Gerry Adams amongst settled politicians and groups went to stand with them to protest outside Louth County Council.

I don't believe in the credibility of any politician or political group that turns their back on this.

There was a protest of (RTE says) about 150 people, mainly Travellers, at Leinster House today, for Travellers' rights.

Again, only Sinn Fein of the parties there to support. SHAME on the so-called left.
