Default TEN PEOPLE HAVE been confirmed dead following a blaze at a halting site in Carrickmines

TEN PEOPLE HAVE been confirmed dead following a blaze at a halting site in Carrickmines, south Dublin, overnight.

A number of children, including a six-month-old baby, are among the dead, although the exact number of children killed is not yet known.

It’s understood that a husband and wife and their children, all aged under ten years, lost their lives.

Members of two families are believed to have died.

A tragedy. From the article it seems the fire spread between two "pre fabricated housing units". I wouldn't imagine caravans, mobile homes etc are particularly fire proof. Travelers in this country have a bad lot, underprivileged and largely demonized by many state agencies. Many halting sites are extremely undeveloped, Vincent Browne did an interesting show a while back where he explored the living conditions in some halting sites where even things like running water were a luxury.. Traveler services have suffered very harsh cuts and the state attitude seems to be to shove them into halting sites and to forget about them. Until something like this happens.

We will have to await the results of the investigation to see what the cause(s) of the fire were and in particular the tragically high death rate were.

I agree with your comments - prejudice against travellers is to a large extent still considered acceptable in a way that prejudice against gay people, immigrants and other minorities no longer is.

    Tragic and awful.

Emergency accommodation for the survivors of the Carrickmines fire has been blocked by local residents.

Members of the South Dublin community have used cars and heavy machinery to cut off access to a site at Glenamuck Cottages close to the site of Saturday's fatal fire, which claimed the lives of five adults and five children.

Local residents have objected to the temporary accomodation, saying there needs to be permanent accomodation instead.

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council says it gave permission for a family of 15 to move on to a temporary halting site on Council-owned lands at the end of Rockville Drive, off Glenamuck Road, on Thursday.

Sympathy lasted barely 72 hours it seems. Normal service has resumed

In fairness, Labour minister Alan Kelly slammed the blockade attempts in the Dail today.

The blockade by the residents is appalling, but even worse is the local authority, sending a dozer in to dump these traumatised people into a field that presumably doesn't even have planning permission, never mind water supply, telecoms, sewerage and other normal services.

Owen Keegan, on whose watch much of the present "traveller facilities" were miscreated, is known to "not like Travellers".

I would favour the establishment of a National Traveller authority with the power to overrule local authorities (and residents) and order traveller accommodation to be provided at sites of its choosing. These matters can no longer be left to local authorities or nimby residents' associations.

What is needed is a process that actually listens to Travellers about their housing needs (they are not unreasonable) and pay heed to them. Some respect for extended families is needed. Some Travellers want houses and others want sites and the possibility of travelling. Some have trades and need to be able to store tools and equipment. The actual space and design standards of what they get are appalling. Caravans are freezing cold for children at night. Some kind of insulation is needed: its regulation after all for houses. Traveller accommodation areas should be designed in to development plans. In some areas Travellers and settled people get on well as neighbours. Community organisations can play a positive role there.

Non hysterical article on the situation at Carrickmines.

    http://www.irishtimes.com/news/socia...fact-1.2392169

Dumping in the area of the site is mentioned. There has been evidence of settled people dumping in the vicinity of halting sites as they feel they can get away with it.

Yes, singing around bonfires at night is tradition for some Traveller men, and not one that I think we should be trying to stamp out.

The numbers involved who want to live a traditional Traveller life are small and it should not be beyond our ability to find good places for them to live and to halt.

Its for six months while a proper facility is constructed. The buldozers etc were to link up and install the amenities you mention.

No chance of even providing these families with hotel accommodation until a suitable halting site/housing is provided?

    http://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/parents-and-their-five-children-among-10-killed-in-carrickmines-fire-700125.html

The death toll from the fire at Carrickmines, South Dublin, has risen to 10 after another child died in hospital.
Gardaí reported that the youngest fatality is a five-month-old baby. It is believed five children were killed, two of them babies.
The 10 dead are from two families and also include a mother and father and their four sons, all aged under 10. The fire is being treated as a tragic accident, a traveller support group said.
One of the dead people was a pregnant woman.

The family remain anonymous, which may be their own wish, but it is in stark contrast with the way that most tragic deaths are reported, in human terms.

I'm afraid my confidence in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown's capacity or will to provide habitable accommodation for Travellers is zero.

Marian Finucane's panel members nodding to each other that Travellers should not be allowed to travel.
