There was some constitutional crisis in the 50s , apparently. Some felt the name Mountbatten ( Battenberg in English) should be on the birth certs instead of Windsor ( euphemism coined during anti German hysteria in 1917). Churchill was livid with rage - he had a long running feud with Mountbatten and blamed him for the loss of India blah blah. Mountbatten Windsor is the last compromise I could discover. It's like a hall of mirrors and I found myself losing the will to breathe as I trawled through websites with names like Royal Grovelling Cringebucket. But I knew you guys would be frantic with worry about this. Now you can have closure. I went through hell for Polworld and think I should be rewarded with some title. Chief Heraldic Brown Nose of Hibernia. Hmm. that'll need work.....
    Cheers for that
Was it Queen Vic who married her first cousin? That must have confused the naming!

The Wolfe Tone bridge was temporary closed to the public to allow a few monarchs around Galway today. Up the republic.

I would welcome this only in so far as it shows how mental and swivel eyed the SINDO types have gotten of late.

The two of them obviously wanted to meet up, and a few people took photos. So what?

I'm sure Adams made a few pointed comments.

Adams is obviously the only alternative Taoiseach. It's him or Kenny/Blueshirt Ógs.

This is the sort of nonsense that ought to go.

Visiting 'dignataries'/heads of State/monarchs/whatever should not be afforded special escorts and protection. A waste of resources.

If people can't interact as people with other people they have no place visiting a Republic.

Wolfe Tone - ah I wonder how he'd feel about this?

Meanwhile BBC Radio 4 - which is meant to be the flagship news and current affairs station - describes the village of Mullaghmore as 'scarred' by the events of 1979. Bet it come as news to most of the denizens. After all neither the victims of the bomb or the perpetrators had much to do with Sligo , let alone Mullaghmore.

I noted as well that an article on the BBC website about Mountbatton and the IRA attack at Narrowwater mentioned that an innocent civilian was killed at the latter in the "crossfire". Except that there was no crossfire, the British just opened up across the water at everything in site when they were blown up.

    Yes, the Warrenpoint ambush.

Biggest IRA victory since Kilmichael. The IRA blew up a lorry of the British parachute regiment. The surviving soldiers then gunned down two innocent people who were birdwatching.

I think one of them survived. They probably thought they triggered the bomb

Sinn Fein to meet British Prince Charles again.
No "consultation" this time, normalisation complete?

Prince Charles of the British Royal Family is due to visit Ireland this week for a number of public and private engagements. Sinn Féin elected representatives have been invited to attend some of these events.

The Ard Chomhairle decided at its meeting last Saturday to give clearance for elected representatives to attend a number of these events in their official capacity as Mayors and as representatives of their communities.

It also cleared Mary Lou and Michelle to meet with him. This meeting is intended to further developing reconciliation and healing processes.

It is based upon the reality that suffering and pain has taken place on all sides, and that there must be acknowledgement of the loss experienced by every side on the basis of equality and respect for each other. Justice and truth for all victims and their families remains a central part of moving our Peace Process forward, in particular all those campaigns and families for whom these have been denied.

For some time I have thought that the long term agenda of the British establishment is Ireland rejoining the Commonwealth.

I am not personally implacably opposed to that, it is a matter of deciding what is in the country's best interests.
