Classic example of making the perfect the enemy of the good. Don't ever run for elective office, you'll likely get tied up in knots at the first hurdle.

Pardon my ignorance on the topic. I was under the impression that there was no nicotine in them but it seems there is. Little long term study has been done on them .

The Murky State of E-Cigarette Research

Given the vast amount of interest in the effects of tobacco use (there are academic journals devoted to the subject), it’s not surprising that the research community is turning its attention to e-cigarettes, the increasingly popular battery-powered twigs that vaporize a nicotine-filled fluid. But so far, that research has been hard to grasp.

Perhaps because the picture has been so muddled, a study released in JAMA Pediatrics last month got a lot of attention because it appeared to offer a clear public health message (though whether it was the correct one is disputed). Analyzing survey data from U.S. middle- and high-schoolers, the authors — scientists at the Center for Tobacco Control, Research and Education at the University of California, San Francisco — concluded that e-cigarette use did not discourage, and might have encouraged, conventional cigarette use.

"E-liquids" used to refill e-cigarettes are potent, unregulated neurotoxins. Evidence of the potential dangers is already emerging.

Do e-cigarettes help people quit smoking? New study raises doubts

A new study suggests that e-cigarettes don’t actually help people to quit smoking, but its authors have raised doubts about their own research. Nothing quite divides anti-tobacco advocates these days like the debate on whether e-cigarettes can actually help people quit. So a study like this one from the Center for Tobacco Control Research and […]

E-cigarettes don’t help you quit smoking. And they shouldn’t be allowed to say they do until they can prove it.

    WHO weighs in...

THE WORLD HEALTH Organisation (WHO) has issued a damning indictment against e-cigarettes.

The health body of the United Nations has called for a range of tougher measures to be implemented against the use of the devices. These include banning their indoor use and preventing their sale to children.

It was suggested that the indoor use of the devices should be banned “until exhaled vapour is proven to be not harmful to bystanders”...

...The WHO were also critical of claims by manufacturers that e-cigarettes are not harmful. The body said that manufacturers should obtain, “convincing supporting scientific evidence and obtain regulatory approval” before being allowed to make any further statements.

There were also calls for a ban to be imposed on flavoured versions of the vapour devices and for restrictions to be made on their availability in vending machines..

Countries should consider curbing the use of e-cigarettes because there is not enough evidence to show they help people stop smoking, according to a World Health Organisation report.

Vaping will be on the agenda of a major meeting starting in India on Monday of the 180 countries that have signed the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, aimed at combatting Big Tobacco and preventing the millions of deaths every year around the world caused by smoking.

But the public health community is split over whether e-cigarettes are friend or foe and some are outraged by the WHO’s advice to the meeting. It suggests countries that have not already banned e-cigarettes and other forms of nicotine delivery might want to consider imposing severe restrictions, including banning the flavouring of e-cigarettes as well as sales, advertising and possession by young people.

Countries might also want to ban nicotine delivery devices from all public places where smoking is not allowed, require health warnings about the chemicals in them, include information on the addictive potential of nicotine and ban any claims that they can help people give up tobacco smoking, the report says.

    Not just Juul, others too.

FDA has given Juul Labs, the maker of the wildly popular e-cigarette, 60 days to address the "epidemic" of teen usage and addiction to nicotine due to its product. If they can't prove they can curb teen usage, Juul risks being shut out of the market.

Martin Dockrell, Tobacco Control Programme Lead at PHE, said: “We know that e-cigarettes are probably not completely safe, but that’s not the issue. The question is, are e-cigarettes safer than the alternative? And, for almost all e-cigarette users the alternative is smoking, and it's really important that they understand how much safer e-cigarettes are, compared to smoking".

Seems to me that's not the issue at all either. Better question, how big/small are the differences, and if small are they worth it?
