Default RNU Student activist was target of MI5 train approach

RNU Youth officer and local election candidate for West Belfast, Tommy Doherty has called upon the National Union of Students and the University of Ulster to show their support for Coleraine student Stephen McCourt, following an attempted MI5 approach upon the Coleraine to Belfast train on Friday afternoon last.

The card left by MI5 operatives ‘Brian & Julie’, contained cash and selected Karl Marx quotes.

The young student activist who was returning from a morning exam, was tapped upon the shoulder by a man with an English accent who pointed to an envelop sitting upon a coffee table before walking on.

The envelop which was addressed to Stephen was subsequently found to contain a card in which was placed £50 along with a carefully chosen quote from Karl Marx, which RNU believe amounted to an invitation for him to work for British Military intelligence.

    Tommy Doherty stated

“The method of approach used in this incident, fits the modus operandi of two Hollywood based agents who operate under the name ‘Brian and Julie’. In the past, this team have openly introduced themselves to people as being ‘from MI5′ and have sent both cards and letters to political activists which both insinuate that they have a deep insight into their personal lives, as well as inviting their targets to collaborate with them in some way.”

Stephen is a politics student who has studied Marx as a part of his degree, he is also a dedicated Socialist and Republican who played a key role in the recent student protests at Coleraine University aimed at opposing privatisation of student services and calling for free education.

    Tommy Doherty continued

“The fact that a young student, committed to legitimate political activity can be stalked, targeted and pressurised in such a devious way by unaccountable spooks, must be of concern to those who claim to stand for free speech and youth welfare in this country. I am calling on the NUS and the University of Ulster to come out in support of Stephen and to demand that British Military intelligence back off and allow him to carry on with his studies in peace.”

Target played prominent role, during the recent occupation of Coleraine University campus.

RNU Ard Comhairle member Ciarán Cunningham further stated,

“Those who delude themselves into thinking that the nature of British rule in Ireland has changed, should consider this disgraceful attempt at manipulation and ask themselves, just what sort of warped system they have signed up to.

Here we have a decent and intelligent young man attempting to study for his future, being followed, spied on and targeted as he returned home from an exam? Why are those on the policing boards happy to ignore this type of behaviour? why is the Director of Public Prosecution Barra McGrory happy to openly co-operate with dark forces who operate in such a devious fashion?”

Republican Network for Unity stand fully behind Stephen and commend his decision to step forward to expose the underhanded activities of British intelligence in Ireland.

We encourage all others who have been targets of such approaches not to be afraid, but to come forward and tell of their experience. RNU ensure a sympathetic ear to any individual who comes forward with such examples, regardless of the circumstances.

Experience shows that the longer people stay quiet about such approaches, the more they will be stalked and targeted by British Intelligence. The only way to get these people off your back is to drag their activities out into the open.

Recording of a conversation between a RNU activist and a MI5 handler. £200 is the going rate for informing these days

''Brian and Julie?'' Two characters from Coronation Street.

Curious how they [spooks] chose a Marx quote in their approach with Stephen having previously studied him for his degree. Nothing coincidental about that i'm sure.

Tapping someone on the shoulder and inviting him to take an envelope with £50 in it is the kind of pressure I would not mind being under.

You have no idea of the amount of damage that can do to your life once you accept that token. [in the circumstances as in op]

If they are only paying £200 they must have plenty of others on their books.

I read a book allegedly written by someone who took the money. He made it alright in his head because of all the bad stuff that republicans had done. Never mind that half of it was done by / instigated by the people he was working for. He was being invited to think of himself as doing something good.

These people have shrinks working for them and they have it worked out how to reel people in.

They have plenty of means to listen in without paying anyone cash. So I guess that people taking money are asked to do more than just report back.

I think it's a bit of a misnomer that informers were paid huge sums

I know of 3 cases during ''the conflict'' of persons being approached by British Intelligence to work for them. One was a lecturer, the others Psychology students. They were all later shot dead by Loyalist Paramilitaries. All attended the same University.

They've ways of disposing of people too.

And after the event there were more shrinks waiting to debrief/provide counselling to family and friends ?

Aye, likely. Interesting though how these spooks stalk the Universities. There's one thing they detest more than a Republican and that's an ''educated Republican.''
