Default DUP in line to be Cameron kingmaker

The Democratic Unionist Party has indicated that they will formally back the Conservative leader if he protects the region from this year's public spending cuts. The move would cost up to £200m (€233m).

The deal, which Mr Cameron is expected to support, would give his party another nine or 10 parliamentary seats. Current opinion polls suggest this would be enough for him to form a majority government.

It is understood that the DUP is willing to enter into a formal coalition with the Tories should Mr Cameron fail to win an overall majority.

Yesterday, Mr Cameron became the first of the main party leaders to visit Northern Ireland during the election campaign. He indicated that he wished to give Northern politicians ministerial positions, and see the North play a key role in the "mainstream politics" of the UK.

In what could be a strange occurence, the DUP could end up with as much if not more influence than the UUP. The UUP have already jumped into the Conservative bed and as such they already have their lot whereas the DUP could have a stronger hand by virtue of not having committed themselves yet.

Saying as what the budget is being cut by over 300m to start with, that's some hard ass negotiating by Peter and his Test tube babies.

It's also the night before an election.

Indeed, there seems to be a lot of promises going around. They are also being courted by Labour:

The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) tonight claimed they were being courted by Gordon Brown ahead of a possible hung parliament in Britain.

The party’s leader Peter Robinson released a letter from Mr Brown in which the Labour leader promised to maintain the size of the block grant from Westminster to Northern Ireland.

The unionists held nine seats in the last Parliament and they claimed the pledge from the prime minister pointed to the willingness of both Labour and the Conservatives to do a deal with the DUP after the election if necessary.

But Mr Robinson tonight initially used the letter to highlight claims that the Conservatives, who are standing joint candidates with the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) in Northern Ireland, could introduce major cuts in the region if the Tories form the next government.

“I have received a letter from the prime minister confirming that because he recognises ‘the unique problems that arose as a direct consequence of the years of The Troubles’ he is committed not to interfere with Northern Ireland’s block grant in the current financial year which would put our recovery at risk,” said Mr Robinson.

“The Tory and UUP plan to cut £200 million out of the budget is unacceptable and must be opposed.

“The Conservatives and Unionists want your vote to cut our block grant whilst the DUP seeks your vote to preserve our public services, jobs and extract the best deal for Northern Ireland.”

Ken Clarke puts his foot in it:
Meanwhile, the Conservative Northern Ireland spokesman, Owen Paterson, moved to downplay a remark by his shadow cabinet colleague, Ken Clarke, who said: “In the end you can always do a deal with an Ulsterman, but it’s not the way to run a modern sophisticated society.”
    Classic quote!

The Tories must feel blessed having loose cannons like Ken and Boris in the one party although neither of them called a voter a bigot. Politicians, a weird breed.

At least Gordon Brown waited until he got back in the car. He thought it was between him and his staff. No excuse for the other clowns
