News from the home-front. It would seem that the whole GD saga is turning into a huge embarrassment for the Greek police themselves. Somebody seems to have decided it is time for a good clean-up and has been using the GD crack-down as an excuse to investigate the police. The head of the security division, previous chief of the Aghios Panteleimonas in central Athens is under investigation for fraud and blackmail, 1 officer in the North was found to be earning a few Euro on the side running a web-site selling arms of unspecified origin, a good few of them were found to possess illegal weapons and lots of illegal ammunition, another one was caught with a complete arsenal of "provocateur" weaponry, including baseball bats, knuckle dusters, molotov cocktails etc in quantities sufficient to equip a private army of some 150 units, yet another was found to specialize in forging gun licences. A security officer in Athens was found to have two stolen cars on the drive-way, complete with forged registration numbers issued by the relevant department (!). The whole crack-down on the police is headed as "Officers with GD links", which makes it a lot easier to sell to the public and too difficult to twarth by those who don't like it. The Samaras coupd'etat at least has some positive outcome...
I was wondering why the GD detainees were being guarded and escorted by the specialist anti-terrorist units (which is why they are wearing face-masks, it's standard practice all over the world) rather than the standard police units. Maybe this ongoing parallel investigation is in reality unearthing the caches of weaponry GD is reputed to have in secret locations around the place, but so far not found by the police units looking for the stuff....
