Was it a move to consolidate a position of influence? The Washington Post has a massive audience and is one of the most well respected dailys in the US . While the paper was editorially independent will Bezos respect the political independent views editorially? Guardian article mentions the paper has been losing some revenue with falling print sales so perhaps the sale came at the right time.

Wikipedia cites the above as evidence he is a member of the Bilderberg group. Could be a clever move buying the WaPo then...

WaPo is owned by Bezos personally, rather than Amazon. That said, it is speculated that soon you may receive a complimentary WaPo with every Amazon order. That would push circulation thru the roof. On Cyber Monday Dec. 2, Amazon is expected to process 300 transactions per second in the US alone. That's 26M WaPo's over 24 hours.

This past April, or maybe the one before, there were April Fool jokes about groceries being delivered by drones. No more jokes please.

In a segment on the Dec 1, CBS program Sixty Minutes Amazon boss Jeff Bezos disclosed that they are working on that very concept, and hope to have it operational within 5 years. The goal will be to deliver to you in 30 minutes,-in those areas where the service will be offered - not everywhere.

You can get a sense of it at the 4 minute vid below which is a backstory to the segment that was broadcast. Octocopters! Cool!

The broadcast segment disclosed that AWS is now the biggest part of Amazon, hosting web services for other big corps and govt. agencies, including the CIA no less.

I also read recently that Amazon is negotiating to take over all the closed ticket offices on the London underground, to use as bases for its click and collect business. Pretty ballsy.

We're way ahead of ya. Private "commercial" operation of drones, as opposed to the current hobby, non-commercial, operation will be become legal in the US in 2015. Amazon won't be ready for about 5 years.

Some "day after" commentary. Trigger happy dudes shooting drones out of the sky seems to be a real worry.

EXPLODING ONLINE - Charlie Rose scoop on "60 Minutes" - "Amazon unveils futuristic plan: delivery by drone ": "Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos ... walked Rose into a mystery room at the Amazon offices and revealed a secret R&D project: 'Octocopter' drones that will fly packages directly to your doorstep in 30 minutes. It's an audacious plan that Bezos says requires more safety testing and FAA approvals, but he estimates that delivery-by-drone, called Amazon 'Prime Air,' will be available to customers in as soon as 4-5 years. ... Bezos played a Prime Air demo video for the '60 Minutes' team that showed how his octocopters will pick up packages in small yellow buckets at Amazon's fulfillment centers and whiz through the air to deliver items to individual customers 30 minutes after they hit the 'buy' button." "60 Minutes" video http://goo.gl/vWlfvG ... Amazon's YouTube demo http://goo.gl/DuaevQ

Christopher Mims on the real reason Amazon is experimenting with delivery-by-drone. “Technical hurdles aside, it’s likely that in the US, drones won’t even be approved to fly in the way that Amazon needs them to until 2020. But Amazon is nothing if not opportunistic. And Bezos has shown a willingness to push his company into services that are only vaguely related to Amazon’s core mission of eating the world of retail.” Read more here.

What's up with Amazon? Anybody any idea?
since Saturday 21/06, "Seller Central" Amazon.co.uk has been unavailable. Seller central is where sellers on Amazon maintain their accounts, stock, payments etc. It contains very sensitive information about individual account holders, including credit card details. It went down some time on Saturday, and remains down. Amazon cannot be reached for any comment nor support, Sellers trying to login are told they are not "an authorized Seller Central Users", there is no way for them to contact Amazon for help or an explanation, and when they try to change their password, they get a message stating that
We're sorry, but Seller Central is temporarily unavailable. Please check back in a few moments. If you have an urgent question, please use the form below to contact us.
When they fill in the form, they get this message

Has Amazon been hacked? gone bust? Done a runner? or are they simply being totally ignorant and not telling their sellers what is happening?

Can't Access Amazon UK - Troubleshooting Instructions
If the site is UP but you cant access the page, try one of the below solutions:

    Browser Related Problems
Force a full refresh for the site. This can be achieved by pressing CTRL + F5 keys at the same time on your favourite browser (Firefox, Chrome, Explorer, etc.)

Clear the temporary cache and cookies on your browser to make sure that you have the most recent version of the web page. For instructions choose your browser :

    Fix DNS Problems
A Domain Name System (DNS) allows a site IP address (192.168.x.x) to be identified with words (*.com) in order to be remembered more easily, like a phonebook for websites. This service is usually provided by your ISP.
Clear your local DNS cache to make sure that you grab the most recent cache that your ISP has. For Windows - (Start > Command Prompt > type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter). For details choose your operating system :
If you can access a website at office or from a 3G network yet it's not working on your computer, it is a good idea to use an alternative DNS service other than your ISPs. OpenDNS or Google Public DNS are both excellent and free public DNS services.
Check our help page for step-by-step instructions on how to change your DNS.

A few years ago they were saying this about Apple, but at the moment Amazon is growing at a much faster rate than Apple.

The case for "AMZN $1T" by Scott Galloway, founder of marketing company L2 and an NYU professor, is spelled out in a MarketWatch post:

    • The strategy: "I think Amazon is going to say to a series of households, 'Tell you what: You don't need any other retailer."
    • The long game: "Jeff Bezos & Co. have declared war on conventional brands, changed the relationship between a company and its shareholders, and deployed Alexa ... in clever ways. ... Amazon is giving people a discount on laundry detergent and other products when they order through Alexa."
    • Why it matters: "[T]he stock's going to become the first $1 trillion market cap company in the history of business."
