    Default Food and Water Security

    The stuff of life.

We have taken a secure supply of food for granted in Europe post WW2, although millions of people elsewhere have died from lack of food and water.

It is only 150 years since our own population was devastated by hunger.

One the one hand, we have technology and knowledge of biological science that is allowing us to increase food production and improve diets.

But there are a large number of threats to supply, and risks.

    Some threats -

    oil dependency and oil price
rapid climate change - drought, cold weather, hot weather
    water shortage
    pesticides, chemicals (adverse effects)
    loss of bee population (fertilisation)
short food chain and small stockpiles, due to commercial pressures
    nuclear accidents - contamination
    top soil erosion
    water contamination and shortages
    pressures of population growth
    and others.

Lack of feedstuff for animals due the the cold weather is our current pre-occupation, with some farmers said to have ended their lives due to inability to feed their animals.

I'll stick this thread at the head of the Environment Forum so that we can maintain it for discussion on food and water security.

Farmers in dire straights - banks won't lend, which seems cracked, and the grass is still not growing.

Green veg being rationed in Ireland and the U.K. because Spanish growers have been hit by cold weather.

Apparently our own growers have been pretty well wiped out by fierce price competition from intensive growers with cheap labour.
