A 3,000% minimum wage hike won't make much of a dent in one million percent inflation.

Venezuela knocks zeroes off its banknotes. The new currency, known as the sovereign bolivar, will be anchored to Venezuela’s cryptocurrency, the petro. That implies a devaluation of more than 90%, and comes amid desperate moves to shore up the country’s shattered economy, including a 3,000% minimum-wage hike.

The latest coup attempt develops https://venezuelanalysis.com/news/14244 and diverse quite gloomy analysis there such as this (via Jacobin mag site ) https://venezuelanalysis.com/analysi...BCcWi6LStTufWo who (Chavez former adviser) thinks there are just months left to turn things around (and it's not as simple as Maduro being to blame, depressingly reminding me of the old saying "All political careers end in failure"). But there has been gloomy left analysis since 2017 at least . I think it may hinge on whether the reports of riots in the 'working class' districts of Caracas are more disinfo or not . I'll declare a vested interested, I donate/subscribe to Venezuela Analysis and hope their coverage is good .

A protest outside US embassy is called for this Monday at 5.30 pm by a newly formed 'Hands Off Venezuela - Ireland' facebook group . I don't know exactly who's organising the event but probably the Workers Party + others judging by the last one I was at

Well Salon is kind of social liberal and UK Guardian like , it's nice they put in some left pieces of course, but they are corporate funded AFAIK and you'd always be wondering . For me the tragedy of Venezuela is that it seems to have become a vicious circle of corruption (yet again). I doubt if even Maduro is that much to blame, he is more of a guy out of his depth surrounded by incompetence + crookedness I'd guess . The piece below illustrates in eye popping fashion how badly Chavism messed up in tolerating corruption in the army . Guys who are probably waiting to be bought? He also goes into the mess in the Brasil where the WP who never got beyond left neo-liberalism even have already suffered a bad fate of a defeacto coup (along with the majority of Brasilians including those conned into voting Bolsonaro) . I don't have anything like all answers but it's clear lack of self-criticism is not good and acts as a cover for corruption https://rosaluxspba.org/en/tariqali/

And the latest Real News piece on the ground in Caracas where the police where not very visible https://therealnews.com/stories/even...s-in-venezuela
(police corruption being an old old issue in the country if you search back far enough but that's a tangential issue https://venezuelanalysis.com/analysis/law-and-justice )

Lights out for 24 hours, and thousands out on the streets, from both sides.

This form of soft invasion has some gambits that are new to me, but may well be recycled from previous playbook exercises.
