What some other sites do is stick a "donor" or similar tag under a posters username, where some people have "Founder Member" on here.

That might act as a bit of an incentive for some?

not sure about that one Saoirse this will put a lot of pressure on people that may not be able to pay yet they can contribute by other means...the purpose of a good fund raising campaign is to get the people that CAN contribute to pay up..

(i am thinking of students, young people like you...)

A free bar in the SibIn ?

My appreciation and a well functioning discussion site would most likely be the main output.

I will do that if anyone sells an organ to help support the site

Now that we have two donate buttons, have contributions doubled?

Perhaps a monthly/quarterly funding update along the lines of x number of donors contributed y amount of Euro would be useful. That way non-donors could get a feel for what the average donation was, and might therefore be better persuaded to jump in.

In the US only about 8% of listeners voluntarily contribute to their public radio stations, but the bigger stations manage to raise over $1M, in one week, twice a year. They do this by devoting about 10 minutes an hour to fundraising, for one week, twice a year. Some form of annual/semi-annual fundraising drive might be worth considering.

Several other things that can be done, include lining up a sponsor to provide “matching” funds that only become due if the “membership” first contribute a similar predetermined amount. That is then "sold" to the membership as a twofer.
As a general rule the most successful man in life is the man who has the best information.

Cass, next time you are in Neuchatel...............

    Politicians heads on stakes?
How about an interactive dart board with politicians faces on it. €10 for 3 darts. A fiver back if you hit the Bull. Easy if you are aiming for a former Ceann Comhairle.

How about taxing users in proportion to the size of their computers (with waivers for Mods, friends of Mods etc). Then cut-back on non-essentials, such as food, drink, electricity. Also you could invite People of High Worth (as they say in the banks) for drinks in a marquee at the next Oxegen festival...
Denis O'Brien, Lowry and Callelly and other snouters would surely make substantial donations if they were assured that references to them were 'balanced' in the RTE style.
