Saoirse...... British imperialism has nothing to do with the divisions in the Irish left...... unless Mick Wallace is a manifestation of British imperialism.

You misunderstand me... I meant that British imperialism has divided the working class in Ireland... orange order, partition etc and that if you want working class unity you must end British imperialism in Ireland first.

Our problems today have more to do with German imperialism. The divisions in the Irish left result from doctrinal hair-splitting and personal disputes.

This places the interests of nationalism ahead of the interests of the working class.

Yes British Imperialism divided the working class in Ireland. The problem is that the only force that can end that division is the working class. The only way Imperialism can be defeated is through a process of complete political, social and economic emancipation of the working class and that emancipation can only happen through a movement of a united working class.

The divisions are based on approach and tactics - the republican left is miniscule within and wider very small left. The two main left organisations, the Socialist Party and the SWP have a different approach to engaging with the working class. The Socialist Party believes that while the approach of the SWP might lead to short-term gains in the long run it is counter-productive and could lead the SWP into major compromise with the parties of the establishment.
