Default Armed military on the streets in Greece!

Today we reach a new low in current Greek history.

to the disgust of the vast majority of Greek people, and despite the ongoing denials by the military chiefs that this was being planned, our government saw fit today, (the day we celebrate the rising of our fathers and grandfathers against the Naxi occupation) to occupy the streets of Thessaloniki with armed Greek miliatry personel.
Reports speak of over 1000 armed soldiers patrolling the streets of the city and preventing people from getting anywhere near the place where government politicians (th ehighly unpopular minister for defence amongst them) will deliver their key note speeches.

The soldiers complement some 5000 riot police, adding to the sense of a military take-over in progress.

Even the military news portals like Onalert demand the removal of the soldiers, stating that
Soldiers are peoples sons, they have nothing to do with riot police

If there was anything the Samaras government could have done to seal their growing unpopularity with Greeks of all walks of life, this is it.

Again, despite vehiment denials by the military and the government, this video made in Feb 2011 show the often quoted but always denied "Kallimachos" training exercises. Kallimachos is a military camp in Northern Greece where the military were being trained by officers of the riot police in "crowd control". the existance of both the camp and the traing was always denied by the authorities. Until now..

The situation is clearly very dangerous - along with the apparently mainly unchallenged thuggery of Golden Dawn and other police-linked right wing boot-boy groups. Ultimately, fascist regimes would be the only type of regime that could enforce the degree of impoverishment required to repay credit bubble debt across Europe and to wind down living standards to meet requirements of the new post globalisation world economy.

In Egypt, millions of people confronted the army and police to force the removal of Mubarak. It will take a cohesive and determined movement of millions in Greek to defend basic civil rights and civilian government.

Seriously though ....... it was a condition of a country joining the EU that they have democratic institutions etc ....... remember the difficulties for Cypress and now Turkey? ...... but it now appears that the EU is driving countries back into Fascism.
