EU partnership with Israel enhanced

The European Parliament added the access of Israeli pharmaceuticals to the list of unrestricted products for importation to the European Union (EU). This must represent competition for the important pharmaceutical industry in Ireland. On the grounds that enhancing the agreement (Agreement on Conformity Assessment and Acceptance of Industrial Products) between the EU and Israel is a failure to admonish the Israelis for their treatment of Arabs in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) sought to postpone the inclusion of Israeli pharmaceuticals but were voted down by the European People's Party (EPP). Emer Costello MEP (Labour) has expressed her disappointment with this defeat.

Interesting debate last night with my uncle, aunt and grandmother. Ranged from Irish sovereignty to the encroachment of the EU on our lives to the extent where they control everything, to the Middle East. My nana who is a dual US-Irish citizen waffled on about how Israel has the right to existence. The Uncle shut her up pretty quickly when he said Israel does not seem to think Palestine should exist. She said Irish people have pre disposed slants towards the Palistinians, which we do as we are as a people historically very opposed to annexation and imperialism. I suggested she and other Americans are opposed to the very notion of Palestinian freedom, something she didn't deny.

Gilmore will no doubt give the US line on this in the near future in any case.

That's what happens when you pool sovereignty, you lose the ability to exert any influence in the world and you get lumped in with the friends of the Zionists.

The same thing will happen on the economic front in the USE, we'll have little influence over economic policy and will be at the mercy of decisions that favour the interests of the European corporate world.

There is no other road that can be travelled on the road to further integration. Nobody cares what we the 1% think.

If she had stated or maintained or affirmed or asserted that Israel had the right to exist, would you and your uncle have agreed with her?

My opinion is that Israel does have the right to exist. I hope I am not waffling.

I'm not sure it does. Israelis may have a historical right to co-exist in the region with other tribes historically but the Israeli claim to a state based on the notion of a 'kingdom of david' is a dodgy one without any evidence other than an assertion in jewish religious scrolls.

There isn't any historical or archaological evidence for any state so the very foundation on which the modern 'israel' is based is distinctly dodgy.

Secondly, no apartheid state should be recognised as a partner in the United Nations. Must remember to 'find' a scroll suggesting the O'Sullivans are entitled to a state of our own containing most of Montana.

I wonder would the Israelis support my building a big wall around my ancient homeland. Given to me by god, tha knows... 'israel' is an ongoing landtheft in full view of the world.
