There are a lot of local shops making a good effort and I don't mind paying a little extra to support them if possible. My local corner store is cheaper for things like briquettes than Tesco, cigarettes, newspapers are the same price and help keep up the turnover in these small shops. There's a lot to be said for variety.
I do almost all my shopping locally. I like my local grocers some of their prices are cheaper to those quoted on Tesco adverts. My local shop is also friendly, helpful and willing to order if an item is not stocked.

There has been in some places a kind of monopoly that has gone and those shopkeepers who thought it clever to gain a Euro off an unsuspecting customer are now finding that one euro is costing them all future business.

I think most people try to remain loyal to their regular shops.

You have to install it yerself and this is where some businesses are making a killing. SOme of them are charging a fortune for the installation of the dishes and charging up to and around €200 for sticking a cable in and connecting a dish! There is also the problem of certain apartments that there is a rule on some places that there is no external sattelite dishes as these places see them as being unsightly for some reason! We used to have that issue in a flat we rented in Parkwest near Cherry Orchard but we kept it just inside the door so there was not much they could say.

Saorview set-top boxes fluffy not satellite boxes. Just stick the old aerial cable into the new box and connect the box to the TV with a scart or HDMI cable. They tune in relatively easily, just press a few menu buttons and you're sorted.

    Emm..
About 55,000 households are without a television service as they have yet to switch to a digital provider, according to new figures from Television Audience Measurement (TAM) Ireland
A spokesman for the Department of Communications said he was surprised that so many households remained without a TV service. “The figures are surprising,” he said. “They don’t seem to tally with the information we have from our digital champions who are located in every county across Ireland.”

I met one last night, who said she has taken the opportunity of becoming TV free. It is a very small number really. Divide it between people who do not have the money to switch, people travelling or temporarily away from home, or wanting a break from TV, and it is a handful.

Big improvement on the old rabbit ears, I have to say. Decent picture quality.
The rolling RTE News channel comes in handy now and again as well.
I find Aertv streams much better than the rte.ie site though. Far less buffering on the same connection.

Buffering? I have the same problem when I am doing my own manicure, but they have a grand little gadget in the chemist's that does a lovely job as long as you work from side 1 to side 4. Shiny smooth nails. no cables and no monthly bill.
Never saw it on the telly though

S'ok, PJ. I do know what buffering is.

Spent my first 10 years in the US without a TV, and think I'm none the worse for it.
