Ireland getting fined for not collecting Apple taxes

Separately, the European Commission also said it would sue Ireland over its failure to collect as much as €13 billion in back taxes owed by Apple following an order last year and refers case to EU court.

“More than one year after the commission adopted this decision, Ireland
has still not recovered the money,” EU Competition Commissioner
Margrethe Vestager says in emailed statement.

Ireland had until Jan. 3 deadline to recover tax EU said was owed by Apple. Although Ireland has made progress on the calculation of the exact amount of the illegal aid granted to Apple, it is only planning to conclude this work by March 2018 at the earliest, EU says. The Commission therefore decided to refer Ireland to the EU Court of Justice.

The usual result, money for the lawyers. I saw somewhere that we had already spent several million € on the issue, more to come.

    Leo talking tough

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar threatened the Government may take Apple to court over the delay in coughing up €13bn in back taxes demanded by the European Commission.
Brussels has already referred Ireland to the European Court of Justice for failing to collect the money more than a year after the technology giant was ordered to pay up.
The Government and Apple have consistently insisted the tax was never owed, and both have appealed the controversial ruling. It has said officials have been working on establishing an escrow fund to house the money once the final amount is calculated.

But Mr Varadkar upped the ante yesterday as he appeared to cast blame for the delay on to Apple. Suggesting a strain in relations between the Government and one of the country's biggest employers, the Taoiseach said the Government didn't want to be in the position where it would have to take legal action against Apple.

    12.5%

Eight of the 100 highest earning Irish-based multi-nationals are paying no corporation tax whatsoever, five have a tax bill of less than 1% and others are effectively being paid by the taxman because of serious loopholes in the tax system.

The State's financial watchdog revealed the shocking situation at the start of a detailed Dáil meeting with Revenue this morning despite Revenue chairman Niall Cody insisting: "I don't believe Ireland is a tax haven."
