Trappatoni has been a disaster and has set Irish football back 20 years. His total lack of confidence in the ability of the players available has resulted in us being looked upon as a laughing stock.

He is a joke and was a joke among football commentators for 10 years before Liam Brady got all nostalgic and Denis O Brein got all patriotic, all of a sudden.

The FAI have been a mirror image of Ireland in general over the last 10 years.

They have been led by a shyster, who used the organisation as his own fifedom, rather than for the good of those who are the organisation.

Bertie and Delaney. One of the same.

Suprising to see such a long thread on only one match, in compared to the gaa threads this summer. Do ye think that would mean that more users are from dublin rather than the countryside??

On the match itself, i just found out the result there now and believe that its the worst 4 30 years. Never has an irish team every laid down so pathetically. Trap must be shown the trapdoor, if only to preserve pride.

Ah, so that's why Damian Duff isn't around any more. Trap doesn't like left wingers

I don't think so. I'd guess that the urban rural divide on here is around 50/50.
A lot of the big names were gone before it got to August.

Aha! so its all about the big names now is it. Sounds like the same reason many irish people supposrt Man U, Liverpool, etc.

Cork and Dublin were in the semis in september, and its not like Mayo or Donegal are unknowns

Maybe there is a 5050 dublin/country divide put its certainly not that way when it comes to sport!

Being from a county that never had hurling and doesn't really have football any more I'm probably not best placed to comment

Yer on the ball there Dunphy raised the issue last night after the match and said that Trap had been disrespectful in a lot of ways to the younger players. Robbie Brady should have gotten a run out on the pitch as should have some of the younger players. Dunphy was talking about Trap delegating the tasks of scouting players out to other staff like Tardelli & Co to watch the players whom may be included in the squad. Was shocked by Darren O Dea last night and the whole defence bar Seamus Coleman was a shambles. Coleman was cool under pressure and had amazing compsure, definitley needed for being a defender. The Faroe Islands should be beaten easily but the litimus test is going to be the matches against Austria and Sweden. The Faroes only marginally lost. Might be time for Trap to go...

The Trapattoni years have been about ugly football. Football so boring that I've started cheering for the opposition in the hope that after enough humiliation Trap will finally be sacked. So last night was a victory of sorts for those of us who want him gone. The fans need to vote with their feet or with protests to remove him.

I don't mind losing if the game is played positively, the way we've been limping along with this stale team and manager is unwatchable. Ireland matches are now occasions to be avoided.

John O Shea said it himself after the match. There is a way to lose and a way to just be humiliated. We were more than humiliated....

I actually laughed out loud when I read that ridiculous text by JRG. Some people never grow up.

There is also of course a notable crossover - re: your observation of the lack of GAA threads - between these Citizen Smith bedroom revolutionaries and the "beautiful game".

Trappatoni is a supporter of the far right in italy (along with Capello) - his political and football philosophy are the same - ultra conservative - he hates new and he hates radical - he surrounds himself with a bunch of yes men who wouldn't dare criticise what he is doing (as shown by his ostracisation of the likes of McClean, Clark, Gibson and others). Some one listed his acheivements - the vast majority were in the 1970s and 1980s - what he won in the 1990s were in spite of him being manager - not because of it.

Trappatoni came into the Irish job and steadied the ship after the disaster that was Staunton - however - his conservative approach that steadied the ship is now becoming an absolute feter on future prospects. He has to go.

As for replacements - Hughton isn't an option unless he's pushed by Norwich - then I would fully support it. Given that the FAI will have no money to buy out a contract or get a high-profile manager - I would go for Owen Coyle or (the man I wanted instead of Trap) Arie Haan. Otherwise we'll end up with someone like John Sheridan (sacked by Chesterfield a couple of months ago)
