Any Muslim readers out there to let us know if that is right?

Christian leaders have spoken out about the likes of Wonga, too. Funnily enough, usury is technically against our religious rules too, not that one woulda thunk it, looking at Wall St, the City etc.

Given that the NE of England is not one of its wealthier regions, this is particularly bad PR. These so called legit pay day loans companies are proliferating all over the place and even some of the more conscience ridden of the political classes are expressing concern.

I'm with the MCB on this one... Wonga are trying to legitimise themselves with the fans to win more business and 4000 % interest on the backs of the poor is not ok.

I find it somewhat ironic that a Premiership football club which was sponsored by one of the financial institutions associated most with the financial crisis in the UK (Northern Rock) is now sponsored by a legitimised loanshark preying on the poverty this financial crisis has largely created.

Sorry Lapased, not doubting yer fundamentalist talents but if you are going to compete internationally ye will have to up yer game.
I suggest less of the "fun" and more of the "mental" will be required to compete on a world stage

Yes, since the 1974 FA Cup final when I thought to myself, let me see now, who will I support for the rest of my life, Liverpool or those guys in the nice stripes? Big Mac swung it for me. And who did all the damage that day? Kevin f........ Keegan.

Except that it was a competition for teams who hadn't already qualified for Europe, came from a city with only one team, came from a city which was holding an international trade fair and I presume came from a city whose name began with N ended in E and had ewcastl in the middle.

Had a similar but somewhat warmer thought when Barcelona sponsored by Unicef took out the AIG Manc filth.

Large football clubs like Newcastle should have cultural advisors who can pick up on things like this. In ancient times when charging interest was forbidden, this was gotten around by bankers or whatever the equivelant was by "renting" out the loans that people had. Not too clear myself on the principles underpinning what the reasons are behind the Wonga issue but there may be something here on Islamic Banking : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_banking . As interest is forbidden and the codes of practice tight, risk must be shared by all interest parties in the loan and not the shifting of risk on to one party who would bear the burden of a loan. This may be the principle behind why some of these companies are not in line with Islamic law .
