The role of the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council is to
- Assess the official macroeconomic and budgetary forecasts,
- In relation to each Budget and Stability Programme Update, assess whether the fiscal stance is conducive to prudent economic and budgetary management, including with reference to the provisions of the Stability and Growth Pact,
- When legislated for, monitor and assess compliance with fiscal rules as set out in the Fiscal Responsibility Bill.
As far as I can see, the only part of their mandate that the department should have been doing already is they're allowed comment in public.
