This Redditt/Gawker dispute has just escalated. Here are two more pieces.

Reddit's creeps are losing their Internet war, with the site banning the subreddit r/CreepSquad, which was already a replacement for the recently blocked r/CreepShots, both places for men to upload photos of unsuspecting women. Site admin David Croach has also banned user the moderator of those subreddits, POTATO_IN_MY_**** for being too creepy, as Croach explains in a thread on Subbreddit Drama:

There are actually a lot of rules that we (the admins) recently found out when we investigated his (PIMA’s) account that he had broken. The most recent one was creating a subreddit that disregarded the rules of reddit regarding sexualizing teens/minors, and not being active in moderating posts that broke that rule. He’s had multiple offenses in that category.

This all happened after Reddit retaliated against Jezebel's Katie J.M. Baker, posting a photo of her to CreepSquad that made it to the front page of the subreddit, as BetaBeat's Jessica Roy explains in her detailing of the saga. Baker had written a post about Predditors, a Tumblr, which is now password protected, that sought to expose the identities people posting pictures of often scantily clad women without their consent. Redditors say that site led to the assault of one of its members (they also like the idea of keeping their anonymity), hence the backlash.

Two evenings ago, this war escalated when a group of Reddit moderators banned Gawker media because Adrian Chen maybe threatened to expose revered user Violentacrez, who also happened to start the subreddit r/jailbait. These two things are certainly related, as this is about keeping certain content on Reddit without having real people's identities linked to the users posting this content. It's no surprise then, that the anti-Gawker media push was also led in part by POTATO_IN_MY_****, who wrote a tribute to his fallen comrade, where he also mentions the CreepShots drama. Following both events, his advice for Redditors is one and the same: "PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHEN POSTING PERSONAL DETAILS ABOUT YOURSELF ON REDDIT."

Though Gawker is now banned from 68 subreddits, per the r/BanGawker subreddit, we'd say the creeps are losing this war. Baker didn't seem to mind having her picture up for all Redditors to see. "Flattered that moderators of r/Creepsquad respect me enough to put a photo of me on the main page of their subreddit!" she tweeted. So far, in fact, both Chen and Baker got what they wanted. Violentzcrez is no more, and CreepSquad was taken down after one day on the Internet. It doesn't sound like Gawker writers are losing sleep over their lost page views, for which they still get bonuses, either, with Jezebel's Eric Gloria Ryan tweeting the following:

This has also shown the mainstream world the dirtier side of Reddit, with the story making its way to places like The Guardian, Politico, and Slate. In fact, this attention may have had something to do with the banning of CreepShots and CreepSquad, while other unsavory threads, like r/picsofdeadkids remains. These underbellies exist just fine until the world discovers them, and then with enough pressure, they don't. The jailbait section, for example, didn't get taken down until Anderson Cooper brought the site to the world's attention on CNN. Only then, did Reddit "reluctantly ban child porn," to use the words of Chen.

After getting the entire Gawker network banned from nearly 70 subreddit sections, Gawker's Adrian Chen has followed through with what got him kicked off in the first place—unmasking a Reddit user he called the "biggest ***** on the Web," known as Violentacrez, in a lengthy post on Gawker.com. Chen's threat to reveal this man, whose real name is Michael Brutsch, this week incited a Reddit moderator campaign to block all Gawker sites in an attempt to show solidarity and protect the identity of Brutsch, as well as to defend an assumed right to anonymity on such threads. Chen had originally sought out Violentacrez because of his connection to the jailbait scandal last year, and wanted to further interview him because of a new photo scandal brewing over CreepShots, which we explained yesterday.

Today, Chen followed through with his plans, detailing Brutsch's on and offline life after a phone call between the two in which Brutsch admitted he was indeed Violentacrez. Chen writes, "Violentacrez and his fellow moderators worked hard to make sure every girl on jailbait was underage, diligently deleting any photos of whose subjects seemed older than 16 or 17." At the same time, Brutsch was caring for his disabled wife and paying his mortgage.

Even with Violentacrez's connection to what Chen calls "the absolute worst stuff on Reddit," he had a surprising amount of support from the Reddit community, which created the separate subreddit r/bangawker, where moderators and other Redditors pronounced their distaste for Chen and Gawker. Chen explains why:

This is how Violentacrez, the Reddit's creepiest user, also became its most powerful. Sure, he was responsible for the absolute worst stuff on Reddit, and by extension, some of the worst stuff on the internet. But Violentacrez was also seen to be, as Chris Slowe put it to me, "a trustworthy and be a positive member of the community." He moderated more than 400 subreddits and had many high-profile friends, amassed over many years. His stable at times included hundreds of popular mainstream subreddits, like Funny and WTF, that reach audiences of millions. Violentacrez further solidified his reach by becoming a mentor to other moderators. He created the first FAQ for Reddit's rather unintuitive moderator interface. He also helmed a number of subreddits dedicated to providing guidance and camaraderie for other moderators, including the essential modhelp.

Though, as Chen's reporting shows, power on Reddit only goes so far. What happens on Reddit doesn't stay on Reddit—no matter how powerful the Redditor.

Here’s an interview that ran on NPR with Adrian Chen about the Reddit controversy over exposing the identity of the person behind the Violentacrez handel.

Michael Brutsch, a 49-year-old man who posted on Reddit under the name Violentacrez until Gawker's Adrian Chen outed him, went on Anderson Cooper 360 to defend himself on camera for the first time.

Brutsch's Reddit persona became famous for creating offensive subreddits, most notably r/jailbait. It was Brutsch's masterwork, and it drew Cooper's attention a year ago. It makes sense, then, for Brutsch to attempt to atone for his Internet sins on Cooper's show once he could no longer hide behind Violentacrez.
We say sort of because Brutsch's apology is half-hearted at best. "Well, I am to some degree apologizing for what I did," he tells the interviewer. "Again, I was playing to an audience of college kids. And you know, when two years ago, when all of this was at its height, the audience was appreciative and supportive of the sort of gallows humor that I put out there."

But it was all worth it for Brutsch. He did it all for the upvotes, yeah, the upvotes.

"Honestly, the biggest thrill I got was those meaningless internet points." Brutsch blamed Reddit for his behaviour, too. "Reddit encouraged and enabled this kind of behavior." He brought along the gold-plated bobble head the company sent him for the traffic generated by r/jailbait.
[Update: Andy Baio points out the interview doesn't mention the gold-plated bobble head was a community-voted award for "Worst Reddit," which doesn't excuse anything. It was still an award for a jailbait subreddit.]

This is, we suspect, one of the final chapters in Brutsch's narrative. He's been outed, backlashed, backlash-to-the-backlashed, and now he's had his national television defense. Like any great cultural offender, he's lived out his purpose. He's lost his real life job, but not the Internet. Brutsch was still appearing on Reddit as of a few days ago. Meanwhile, the creeps march on.

This reads like something childish (not what you wrote but what is happening!). Chen did a big favour by outing someone like Brutsch for his posts and yet suffers a backlash. This is another reason if ever there was any for disliking Reddit and what its all about. The whole story goes to show what can happen when you dont put proper controls in place. Not too sure if this has damaged Reddit itself but certainly its not going to help it in any way having guys like Brutsch doing some work for them.
