It's a drag at the start entering links ... lots of captcha stuff. My 13 year old is an expert but I've barely got the hang. Takes practice .. and lots of it.

My 21 year old nephew who is about to graduate from a hip DC college tells me that Reddit is where its at. Facebook is over for the hip crowd. I don’t use Facebook or Twitter, nor will I use Reddit either.

According to Google DoubleClick Ad Planner's estimate, the median U.S. Reddit user is male (72%), 25–34 years of age, has college education. The analysis also shows that many of the top ten audience interests are in the tech field, suggesting a computer savvy demographic.

    Yep, it is useful...

If you are looking for a story, just browse the proper Reddit tag, example: if you are looking for political related stories go to: http://www.reddit.com/r/politics/

If you find an interesting story, just submit a link (make sure you submit it to the proper Reddit tag and in the proper format), if people like it and vote it up, it will move closer and closer to the home page and finally could be on the home page and receive thousands of views an hour.

If one of the stories you submit is voted up, you get link karma, if you comment on any story and your comment is voted up, you will get comment Karma, it is nice site.

I think it's worth sticking with. You do find plenty of contrary news, stories and the like. It's the learning curve on searching Reddit that gets me.

Cheers for the info. Was going to put a few links up from here and see what it gets and browse the tags on politics. That is where I found the story on the Greeks occupying Heraklion airport, there is also a lot of rubbish on it though. Will use it along side twitter for the forseeable future and see how it goes...!

    I found a story/link this morning titled:

"Friend got hit in the face with a severed pig's head during a mosh pit. She is now blind in her right eye." !!!

The link leads on to pics of the severed head and the damage it caused.

The comments on the Reddit thread are very supportive.

This comment brought a smile to my face:
The photographer in me agrees... She rocks the eye patch.
Even the injured party gets in a few comments.

Reddit seems like a decent online community.

Reddit has blocked Gawker from several of its threads in order to protect "a prominent member of Reddit's community, Violentacrez," who started the /r/picsofdeadchildren and /r/jailbait sections. Yesterday Violentacrez deleted his account because Gawker's resident Reddit reporter Adrian Chen is intending to run an expose with his "real name and picture," according to a post on Reddit announcing the ban. Chen had mentioned Violentacrez in his post "Reddit's Child Porn Scandal," where describes the user as a "50-something Texas software engineer who openly brags about having oral sex with his 19-year-old step-daughter." Because of that "pursuit to harrass and, allegedly, blackmail reddit moderators with public release of photos and personal information," some subsections have punished the entire Gawker network disallowing any of their links.

I think you have to suspend expectations - or whatever - and just go with the flow.

I was talking to a coder about Reddit and how to use it and I was bedazzled and bewildered by her talk. I kept thinking I was too old for Reddit! There's a huge number of successful communities (both little and large) on Reddit but I'm don't seem to be making much - if any - headway. I am reading many of the links and I vote them up and down but I'm not getting into the nitty-gritty of it ... as yet. But reading from Reddit isn't Using Reddit if I understood the coder properly ... you have to post links and stuff and make sure you pick the right subreddit ?!?!?!

I feel I might just end up ONLY on the FUNNY subreddits

There is a lot of crap floating about on it as I read this. There is tonnes and tonnes of just unfunny or pointless memes floating about the place and for some reason talking about the Weyland Corp from Prometheus ? The politics section is littered with articles from the New York post and I cant be arsed reading the rest I give up! Cursory glancing at twitter shows why twitter is a lot more superior with hashtags giving a clearer indication to information and the layout of twitter being more friendly. Their WTF section from a glance is just a pile of pox, all sorts of random ***** on it.!

Reddit's very configurable. When you're logged in go to

    http://www.reddit.com/reddits/

and unsubscribe from the subreddits that you don't like. The default ones are mostly garbage. Get rid of pics and wtf etc, add ones for topics that interest you. Only the rising topics from the subreddits you're subscribed to are shown on the front page when you're logged in.

I've been on it for five years, once you tune it, it works very well. I recommend askscience, iama, history and LearnUselessTalents ;-)
