Default Fish Giveaway At Kilmore Quay This Morning - A Blow Against EU Bureacratism

A skipper interviewed on Morning Ireland today announced that he and his crew had spontaneously decided not to throw back/dump monkfish as required under EU regulations. They have boxed them up (130 boxes) and are bringing them in to Kilmore Quay, Wexford, about an hour from now, and will give them away to anyone who wants them.

They have reported the catch to the authorities and have done this to draw public attention to the lunatic system that involves killing and dumping fish and calling it "conservation."

Very sorry not to be able to go myself

It sounds like a lot of people showed up for the free monkfish, sigh, wish I was there.

This is the kind of protest I totally support, positive kharma going your way Seamus O'Flaherty.

I take it that €€€ and market voodoo is at the root of discard law rather then conservation worries?
Supply is being artificially depressed or something along those lines

If there wasn't discarding it would be more difficult to operate quotas.

Discard is described as conservation. I have never been able to get a rational explanation for it.

Larger holes in nets is a conservation measure that would actually work.

There would be an incentive to exceed quotas or target conservation species if they could be landed and sold.

Not if you have a quota for the species or the conservation species is smaller than your legitimate target.

Fish just don't behave in the way that you suggest.

Reduction in days fishing, increased net hole size, give fish a chance. Why not cap catches by weight ?

Use science to set a reasonable proportion of non-targetted fish to be retained ?

I know all sustainable catch stuff is valid but the EU is an economic structure long and above anything else.
Anything that so rigidly endorses the ludicrous discard situation must be driven by factors beyond concern for concern of cod.

This moronic obscenity is one of the prime examples of what is wrong with so much of euro regulation.
This has been happening for decades and hasn't been corrected.
And then people expect bureaucrats from the same genepool to sort out the financial crisis?
