    Default Nevin Spence R.I.P.

Devastating news from Co. Down with reports claiming that Ulster center/wing Nevin Spence died today alongside his father and brother in a slurry pit accident near Hillsborough.

Spence, who’d been hampered by an injury, was not in the Ulster side that played Munster last night, but did start for the Ulster Ravens in their defeat against Munster A last night.Spence was a rising star of Irish rugby who trained with Ireland’s 6 Nations squad last year after 2 appearances with the Wolfhounds. Look at his work in the build-up to this try that he scored against Bath in last year’s Heineken Cup group stage.

Horrible tragedy. I didn't connect the dots earlier to who the family is.
    RIP.

Brutal tragedy. Not a rugby fan and honestly not aware of Nevin Spence but this must be a real blow to that community and horrendous for the family.

These pits are so dangerous. There doesn't seem to be a year without this happening somewhere. Is there a solution to it ?

I'm not sure, They're lethal when the crust on the pit is broken and the gasses escape. A person can be overcome in minutes.

It does happen quite often, sadly.
How old was the rugby guy?
    Looks like a kid.

    RIP Spence.

It reminded me of some years ago when i nearly fell into my sister's in law farm- slurry pit. It was frightening and gas from the pit would make you unconscious/dozing etc. It's lethal as i avoid it much as possible when i visit the farm.

He was only 22.... a shocking tragedy for all the family. He had a very promising rugby career ahead of him.... very sad.

Slurry pit hazards being reported on now on RTE 1 (TV) "Ear to the Ground"
