Default "Eire Nua" - Republican Movement Leaflet - 1972

Just tweeted by electionlit - a very interesting leaflet, outlining the Eire Nua programme.

I put the Eire Nua Policy before The New Ireland Forum in 1983. It had been dropped from the Constitution of Sinn Fein at the 1982 Ard Feis. The removal of the policy was proposed by Danny Morrison. This was the first move to oust Ruairí Ó Brádaigh and Dáithí Ó Conaill from the leadership and make way for Gerry Adams.

Rev. Dr. W. T. McDowell, Synod of Dublin, Presbyterian Church in Ireland; Mr. Michael O'Flanagan and Mr. Michael O'Mahony, Federalism and Peace Movement (3 November, 1983).

An essential feature of it was the proposal of a federal system in Ireland with four regional parliaments (one for each province) and a central one. The thinking behind Eire Nua was closely associated with Ruairí Ó Brádaigh and Dáithí Ó Conaill and Ó Conaill in particular to my knowledge. It was Sinn Fein policy up until the early 1980s and remains the policy of Republican Sinn Fein to this day.

I think the thinking behind Eire Nua had much to recommend it but, of course, five parliaments seem like overkill in such a small country

The Regional and Provincial governments certainly would be overkill.
The Provinces would work well enough as "economic regions" whatever they would be. A lot more could be done by local government than at present.

The draft Charter of Rights is more interesting.

"Eire Nua" in full was a much larger document and for a while became Provishional Sinn Féin's official policy. At the time of the Ruairí Ó Brádaigh split (1982) it was instated as Republican Sinn Féin's official policy. Might still be their policy. That's from memory so don't take it as gospel,

eamo ..... the Ruairí Ó Brádaigh split happened in 1986 .... not 1982.

I might be wrong but I think it is very unlikely that Éire Nua (or Eire Nua as they call themselves) will get enough votes to form a government at the next election.

    RSF don't contest general elections.
