Default Hurricane Season - 2012 Isaac

A few days to go but right now Isaac sems to be on a collision course with New Orleans. Still only a tropical storm but expected to strengthen to Category 1 over the warm water of the Gulf.

Someone said this is the third RNC disrupted by hurricanes. Is that right?

I don't know. I think they have put it off for a day but it looks like Tampa will get a miss in any case.

"AIMED AT NEW ORLEANS"-- AP latest: "As Isaac steamed toward Louisiana, ... residents along the state's .... low-lying coast boarded up homes and fled for shelter while storm-wary residents of New Orleans were reassured that levees fortified after Katrina could withstand the anticipated hurricane. Forecasters predicted Isaac would intensify into a Category 2 hurricane, with winds of about 100 mph, by early Wednesday around the time it's expected to make landfall. The current forecast track has the storm aimed at New Orleans, but hurricane warnings extended across 280 miles from Morgan City, La., to the Florida-Alabama state line."

--OBAMA TAKES CHARGE - POLITICO Pro's Erica Martinson:
"Obama signed a 'pre-disaster emergency declaration' for Louisiana on Monday, heaping on federal support for the state and allowing FEMA to stand by with water, meals and blankets. ... Obama also briefed Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant - all Republicans now skipping the convention - along with Democratic New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu. ... The White House churned out constant play-by-play FEMA updates throughout the planned first day of the GOP convention - which was limited to the bang of a gavel and sideline events amid stormy skies and travel mishaps."

Well, let's see how Obama's management compares with Dubya's. Test 1: have they improved the defences such that disaster doesn't happen in the first place? If there is a breach, I'm inclined to think they should abandon city; this won't be the last direct hit, not by a long shot

I don’t get the same sense of worry as Katrina with Isaac. It’s still only a category 1. Katrina was much bigger in area and a category 4.

Definitely the second, not sure about three.

Watching Fox News reporting live from N'Orlans.

Doesn't look too bad at the minute apart from the strong winds

The hurricane moved slowly up the Gulf to the west of New Orleans, touched land and backed off. Now it is just sitting there and dumping huge amounts of water on the city. The levees are holding (one reported breach) and the pumps seem to be doing the job so far but everyone must be praying that it decides to get going again soon.

I think today, in a bizarre coincidence, is the anniversary of Katrina.
