Default 'Arise, Officer Crosbie, you have done the state some service'

    Good man Harry
IRISH IMPRESARIO Harry Crosbie is to receive an honorary OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to the entertainment industry in Ireland and Britain.

British ambassador to Ireland Dominick Chilcott contacted Mr Crosbie yesterday morning to confirm Queen Elizabeth’s formal approval of the honorary award, according to the embassy.

The ambassador, who was on holiday in France, received confirmation of the honour from Britain’s foreign and commonwealth office

    Bunreacht:
    Article 40
    2. 1° Titles of nobility shall not be conferred by the State.

No title of nobility or of honour may be accepted by any citizen except with the prior approval of the Government.

Interesting article that. Maybe some journalist should do an FoI request to see if:-

    • Anyone has ever asked for government permission.
    • The government has ever refused such a request.
    • Are there penalties for those who ignore it?

If we'd had our own honours system then we'd be reading about the difficulties Lord Derrylin is having because of his dealings with Sir Seanie.

Papal titles have often been given out to Irish citizens, and as far as I know govt permission has not been sought, nor any official objections raised.

Perhaps the UK Law Society will stamp him for the title for his services to date, premiums in on indemnity ins to date 65m, payments 311m.

Who is Harry Crosbie ... and why does Brenda want to hang a gong on him?

    An OBE puts one in such prestigious company;

Declining an 'honour' puts you in even more prestigious company - some surprising names here:

    Thanks ... but no thanks

Amongst other things Harry is a property developer who seems to have no problem with dumping his debts into Nama 3/500m, fully expects these debts to have a haircut of 65/70% and then he will get them back again.

Wonder if Brenda checked out his financial background before this award, in UK he would be a bankrupt.

I recall that Harry promised to hold a fund raising event to raise 700k to back Gay Byrne for the presidency last year.
Fair enough. Gay gave him mlliions of pounds of free publicity on the Late Late over the years

Harry rang in to Charlie Bird's lunchtime programme today to get in a plug for the Tall Ships Festival and to modestly accept Charlie's congratulations on his OBE.
The effect was spoiled a little a few minutes later when a discussion on tourism revealed that the royal visit has had no effect on tourism whatsoever
