Default 12 Year Old Atheist in the US Dresses Down Local Government for Mixing Faith and Politics.

This girl gave her local town commissioners an ear full for saying prayers at their meetings and leaving out "all the other gods" and freethinkers like herself.

I was shocked the first time I saw a session of prayers at the start of a local authority meeting in Ireland.

We are a Republic - is it not time that prayers were dropped from the Dail and Council meetings?

As this girl says would a minute's silence for contemplation suit all needs ?

She has a point. As the world moves towards being more secular and as the sky fairys house falls and crumbles to pieces they should bear in mind that atheists make up a good percentage of the population. We are as a country prone to bringing god into everything. Its good to see a young girl like that take a stand against such silliness as prayers ..

Fair go to the young lass. I suppose she will be in for a tough time what with the serenely happy levelling charges that her family have 'corrupted' her and so on. It is a strange society there and I know that in some states atheists have been treated badly in their communities and I also know that there are many atheists who feel they have to keep up a minimal front so their kids don't get taunted in the schoolyard and so on.

I'm not sure I'm comfortable with 12 year olds being put in what can be quite a nasty firing line in the States and I hope she has not been given a script but speaks for herself. If she is speaking for herself and her own thoughts then valete to her.
Think National. Act Local. Oh- and superstition is just the dark matter of human history.

Let public servants pray on their own time.

It would be nice to see an end to that sort of nonsense but at least it's not compulsory. Judges and the president are required to swear a religious oath before taking office - Now that's an appalling instrument of religious discrimination.

The Constitutional Convention would be better served addressing obscenities like that rather than musing on the rights and wrongs of letting children vote.
