Default Finian McGrath, Shane Ross and Joe Higgins to Lead Independent Dail technical Group

Finian McGrath, Shane Ross and Joe Higgins are to lead a technical group of 16 Independent Dail TD's.

This grouping will allow Independent TD's speaking time in the Dail and ensure voices are heard.

Meanwhile it’s emerged three Independent TDs are to vote in favour of Mr Kenny for Taoiseach in exchange for access to Ministers and speaking time in the Dáil.

Michael Lowry, Noel Grealish and Michael Healy Rae opted out of the new technical group.

Don't think there are enough crumbs dropping from this very large Government table to this small group but time will tell.

What are we expecting McGrath to contribute?

Interesting that Michael Lowry, Noel Grealish and Michael Healy Rae (in place of his father Jackie) have decided to swap support from FF to FG further proof of no huge change in Government.

It also seems a bit strange to me that with such a huge majority the Government would see fit to give these three speaking rights and ministerial access.

    Nothing changes.

And Maureen "I knew Tony Gregory" O'Sullivan is to be their whip.

Why do Independents need a whip?

Thanks. Seems very strange - why would the government with the largest ever majority want to mollycoddle that lot?

Because things are going to get very, very rough.

With a 60 seat majority it can get Libya rough and they still wont need to go near Lowry & Co. And if Lab walks they'll need 7 not 3. I just can't see what's in it for the government.

    *ponders*

If FF continue their decline, a possibility of 3 FG gains (or at least FG-by-proxy seats) in Kerry, Tipp and Galway in 5 years? Lowry at least will probably be retiring by then, as may Grealish, and gaining their supporters on the ground would be useful to FG.

Alternatively if Labour flounce within 18 months it leaves FG/Ind on 79, plus presumably the CC, a minority Govt on those numbers could well struggle on. All you have to do is persuade 3 out of 86 Indo/SF/ULA/FF/Lab to abstain or mysteriously just not turn up for crucial votes.

The FF strategy since the late 80s of trying to keep their numbers in the 70s and always having a bundle of gene-pool seats on hand as well was a very effective one in maintaining an unbroken grip on power. It's disastrous what they did with that power, but as a way of cementing a party into power long-term in a fragmented multi-party democracy, it had a certain evil genius.

Political prostitution is not "interesting", it's disgraceful, and is a major reason why nothing ever changes in Irish politics.
Goodbye FF, hello FG. Out of the frying pan, into the fire.

ULA TDs no longer attending TG meetings says Joan Collins. Sick of leaks to the press apparently.

    Does this include Clare Daly?

Finian McGrath, according to RTE News, has resigned from the Technical Group because of Mick Wallace's situation.
