Not really sure the idea of a snap election where FG would use private sectir resentment to whip Labour and win a majority is much of a runner. FG have been 19 months in power and the stench of cronyism, mé féinism and sheer disregard for the rules and laws of the country which they ignore when it suits meand many people view FG as a bastard offshoot of FF, and they will lose big in the next election on their own (lack of) merit.

Michael Noonan, November 2010
I agree with you, FG are a bastard offshoot of FF and alll that is missing is the actual criminal intent to go along with the myriad of other ugly characteristics which you mentioned.
But if they are to lose out big-time in the next election, who benefits?

I understand it seems counterintuitive why FG would go for a General Election or contrive circumstances which might lead to one. Other than long term party strategy. They face a long slow descent into the same contempt into which the last coalition government was held and the only thing that is in their power is the possibility of a Greek style panic button on austerity and the notion that there is no one else fit to govern. The only ones who can upset that are possibly Sinn Fein and they won't want to wait until Sinn Fein are in a strong position emerging through the carcass of Labour on the heritage left.
Timing is all FG have got- they haven't in reality got any room for maneouver on the financial policy side as patronage is restricted by the Troika.FG will attempt to avoid ending up like Fianna Fail I would say and that makes the mandate and timing of it crucial.
Seems a bit daft I know but other than managing day to day that is the only deeper political concern I can see for FG.
Think National. Act Local. Oh- and superstition is just the dark matter of human history.

It is the only concern of FG, political or otherwise. They cannot do anything about the economy, even if they knew what to do. But they are shamatuers, and are clueless in any case. Everything else is optics, designed to leave Labour with the shitty end of the stick. The only concern is the next election and how many of their arses will be easing back into seats in the chamber. Nothing else matters because a) they rarely understand it, if it is economics and b) they can do nothing about it.
In Ireland, getting re-elected is one of the few things a TD understands. Hence the "clinics", the parish pumpism, the endless letters to government departments on behalf of constituents for cattle headage grants, medical cards, disability benefit and so on. It is, in many cases, the only thing comprehensible to many of them. To be highly well paid messenger boys going through the motions to give the impression to their constituents that he cares, he really cares.
RISIBLE.

Why are people assuming that this poll is being put in the field [/West Wing] by a political party?
Are we not due a quarterly Red C poll in one of the newspapers?
General elections at this time of year -?? doubt that- they have the largest majority in the dail as i can't see that they would jettison it.
Can't see really especially Gimme more, whose lust for power stinks. FG are laughing that most of the focus is on Labour for all the troubles that the govt have absorbed all since they entered into government. It smells of their media strategy conserving their dail seats while at the same time, other media focused on Labour.
FG were clever to pass the buck of budget cuts to Howlin instead of Noonan re last budget. Next Dec would be the harshest budget ever as it will define FG/Lab in some ways.
Lab don't have a conscience ... not one so unlike the greens. It's all about their ilk after a lifetime of various different political parties (DL, SP at al). Lab's core principles are gone after these people (careerists) blended in. Once they grabbed it- re power and never let it go until GE.
It's there for them to loot the dail in the form of various entitlements such as expenses, pensions (they don't have to deduct out of their salary as we do in the form of wage/salary), 2nd home mortgage interest, office expenses. The state pay their pensions on top of their salary, which is a disgrace.
