Many liberals who sided with the group feel the Orthodox Church's leader, Patriarch Kirill, has overplayed its hand recently. They point to his support for President Putin and refusal to publicly pardon the protesters. But more traditional believers say the Patriarch needs to be given a chance to revive the Church's flagging attendance rates in a mainly Orthodox society. The BBC

Flagging attendance is not going to be helped by this (not very clever) use of Photoshop to 'disappear' a Breguet watch worth of $30,000!!

So what HAS changed in Russia? A religious man wears a $30,000 watch while girl musicians wear locked handcuffs!

The way I heard it .... the watch was photo-shopped into the photo.

So what's new here. Religious leaders have always known which side their bread was buttered.

I heard today, the solicitors have applied for custody for the children, to avoid them being put into foster care.

I'm afraid the watch is all too real:

The Russian Orthodox Church apologized on Thursday for doctoring a photograph of Patriarch Kirill to remove what bloggers said was a luxury wristwatch following accusations that he lives a lavish lifestyle. It responded after eagle-eyed bloggers said an archive photo of the Patriarch on its website showed the reflection of a Breguet watch worth about $30,000 in the polished surface of a table where his arms rested during talks. The Church made no [direct] reference to the watch in the statement, but said a []“rude violation of our internal ethics”[] had been made and removed the doctored 2009 photo from its website, replacing it with a version showing a watch on his wrist.

“Employees of the press service’s photo-editing desk made a silly mistake while working with the photo archives ... We apologize to all the users of the website for the technical mistake. One of the basic principles of our work is the fundamental rejection of the use of photo editing programs to alter images.”

Typical response from the church when faced with a scandal. Sweep it all under the carpet or else roll out an excuse from the book of bullshit excuses. This practice of the riches of the church benefitting the few who control it has been going on for years in not only the Catholic church but now the Orthodox church has picked up the cat-lick bad habits. In other news, Reuters is reporting that Pussy Riot are going to continue on protesting and are urging all the women in Russia to don balaclavas in solidarity with them. Still surprised to hear some support for Putin, the man is a tyrant with actions like this. Lets hope more and more women take on a balaclava and support Pussy Riot

There is a whole lot of finger pointing going on in this case that imo is more about Putin bashing than it is about a love for cultural freedom. Not meaning you of course, yebbut nobut.

A touch of the Kony's about the whole thing ?

Having said that, I think they should be let off, as they have apologised.

    From Gary Kasparov's Facebook page
Garry Kasparov has just been arrested outside the Moscow courthouse where the Pussy Riot trial is taking place. He was not there to protest, simply to attend, and the police cornered him and dragged him into the police van. This photo shows the police assaulting him inside the van. We hope he is all right and we will provide updates when we have them.

You say Putin Bashing like it's a bad thing. That's exactly what the band were doing (in an artistic sense) because the man is becoming a dictator, and the Russian Church support him.

Well that would tend to confirm it.

Kasparov is deeply involved in US neocon organisations including this one.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Center_...minent_members

They were much involved in the campaign against the "Mosque at Ground Zero" that was in fact a community centre a good way away from the site.

    Richard Perle, Wolfowitz, etc. etc.

Unfortunately, there are dictators all over the world and there has just been an election in Russia. It is not exactly the worst case and I don't think that Pussy Riot is going to be put up against a wall.

I'm all for Putin bashing when it's not a thin veil for US foreign policy aimed at destabilising and further impoverishing Russia.

The interventions of the west have not exactly been successful so far, and directly led to the creation of the oligarchy.

Putin is not liked by the US because he is an independent populist who tells them to go and take a hike when it suits him politically. They would like someone directly on the payroll.

RUSSIAN police have rounded up pro-Pussy Riot protesters, including leftist opposition group leader Sergei Udaltsov.
