Their statements, whatever the intent, seem to me to be wordy, vacuous, confused and without direction.

They are one part of the diverse and geographically extensive "revolt" of the educated young, that has taken part in the Arab Spring, and Occupy - frustrated with the corruption of society and the lack of opportunity, but with no independent vision of how to transform society.
    Haven't actually seen it.

    (Where is it?)

But hey...dreary and nihilistic is a crime committed by many.

And revolt.... in many cases, the word "incoherent" should be added to what Mr Rotten sang:

    "Anger is an energy."

But you agree with what I say to Slim.

This is more than a Slav Malcolm McLaren at work.

The girls are going to prison.

And whatever you think of them 'on stage' they came across pretty well 'on trial'.

I thought it was aggressive and politically nieve. One of the main reasons Putin is popular is the recent history of Russia. One day a super power the next the laughing stock of the world. Putin has given them back some pride and he is wise enough to keep most of his macho behaviour to the judo mat.

I didn't see much of the trial, but they came over in what I saw as angry and fearless. So did Breivik, in his.

    Pride?
    Sounds very CJ

    Judo mat.

Not an expert on the issue but there seemed to have been legit questions asked as to who planted the bombs that hastened the Chechyan operation.

And there were lots of below belt shenanigans going on there.

Cactus...do you have a link for the Zoo?

Yes but the Chechyan operation did not and does not appear to bother the Russians. I don't think there had been democracy in Russia, then when it sort of did they got a buffoon and their empire shrank. Russia is used to dictatorships. Putin is liked.

Judo mat. Putin likes to be seen to be an action man, hunting some defenceless animal, practising judo, all done to show he is fit and strong and many Russians seem to like that.

    Funny.
I don't care what the Benetton agitators say.

On casual inspection, I've time for these people.

    I don't get Slim's problem.

This would be an idle stunt- a low budget location challenged Madonna video in the West.
    For them it's for real.
It is real for them, I agree. And they knew beforehand what could happen to them. This wasn't an effin' and blindin' session on the Bill Grundy show. The sentence they received is very harsh by Western standards, hence the knickertwist on the part of many luvvies. But this "protest" was calculated to cause the maximum amount of offence and these women achieved that by involving the ROC and using the cathedral as a stage for their protest which seemed to be about opposing the ROC as much as it was about expressing dissatisfaction with Putin.

I would be more concerned about threatened journalists and political opponents who end up in gulags or worse, dead, than these . Such opponents do not come out of prison to royalty cheques for sold "product".

Slim, I think once again you see the hand of Ivan Macolm McLaren, royalties carpet bombing downloading.
    You could be right.
But from where are you drawing the commercial conclusion.

Let's face it this sentence is part of a package that likes to silence pesky reporters and gutsy opponents.

It's just that the once marginal means of communication/protest have become mainstream.

But it's not the girls fault if 10% of yr Jimmy Choo's goes to their 'defence fund'.

The only people who tend to go to prison for commercial reasons are the likes of our friends the Quinns.

And that's cos they have money in their possession and they dont want to lose it.

Since the murder of Anne Polatskya (think that is how her name is spelt) most journalists have been cowering in their boots. Putin and the Russian establishment want control of the media and the music that people even listen to and forbid any dissent in Russia. They made a mess of Chechnya and their human rights record makes Pol Pot look like mother Theresa. The Russian establishment has even gone as far as to try and knock the independent stations news out of sync by telling them they must broadcast state run footage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom...an_controversy). Pussy Riot represent a brave act in the face of adversity .

Anne Applebaum in Slate on why Pussy Riot is Putin's greatest threat ever The most dangerous publicity Putin has received thus far is from Madonna, not because she's a serious political figure but because she's not. "Although it is often assumed otherwise, Putin's regime has long permitted political dissent—so long as it appeals only to a small elite," Applebaum writes. But when pop culture comes into play, the audience is not so small anymore. "Global pop culture mutates and changes week by week, just as technology does," she says. "Modern dictatorships will have to make some fast decisions if they want to keep up."

Its possible to see why most of the Russian people accept Putin, and like him. His behaviour is no more, in fact better than they are used to, and he has given them back a degree of respect for their country. Yeltsin shamed them and they were unfamiliar with the kind of insusience the west would have felt for a drunken leader.

There is perhaps that look there.

But let's not forget, these girls threw out ideas.

Perhaps a little hackneyed to us.

But ideas and attitudes are a very long way from bullets.

Yes, Kev, I agree. What I do not understand is that these women were not some Louis Walsh-created group of know-nothing talentless boneheads from Ireland. The women are Russian. So they KNOW what was possible and the possible consequences for what they did. The sentence is grotesque and utterly disproportionate to the "crime". But I just do not get it. What was it they were trying to achieve??? What were they protesting against?? And if it was against Putin, why was this protest so inarticulate and puerile??

I am having a really hard time distinguishing between courage, as you called it, and puerile stuipidity, which is what I am seeing in this so-called protest. At least with FEMEN's form of shock protest, the point is clear. With Pussy Riot, it is garbled to the point of obscurity

Puerile...hmmm...I recall that's what the Catholic Church press office called the similar sort of gig I was doing back in the day.

    A laugh a rattle and a reaction....was what I was after.
