Default Four sentenced to Death over $2.6bn Iran Bank Fraud

That would certainly seem to be a deterrent against bank fraud -

Four people have been sentenced to death for their roles in Iran's biggest-ever bank fraud scandal.

Two other defendants received life sentences, while 33 more will spend up to 25 years in jail, the chief prosecutor was quoted as saying.

The scandal involved forged documents reportedly used by an investment company to secure loans worth $2.6bn.

Savage sentencing seems to be at least one thing the USA and Iran have in common.

Ang, the link in your post led me to the case of Yong Vui Kong, 19 years old when caught with heron in Singapore. He now faces death by hanging. He is or was when caught illiterate and poverty stricken. The judge in his case asked the prosecution lawyers to reduce the charge so he would not have to impose the mandatory death penalty, they refused, God forgive them.
It seems there is an active and well supported campaign in Asia urging clemency. Links below.

Should the case of Yong have its own thread? Well if the mods. think it should then, as yer man in Star Trek ( baldly guy, not the great and original chubby guy) says "make it so"

ok maybe he never said that, so sue me

Should be of interest to the "Maple 10", from any experience it is not possible to take a loan without a possible downside.

Proper order. Fair go to the Iranians. I recall reading about this caper and it has a certain familiar ring to it in places.

Bye bye the lads who thought they could get away with thieving from their own society and by attacking the infrastructure of their own country in an attempt at self-enrichment.

There's a lot to be said for the Persian way of handling such matters. As for the heroin smuggler- old rule- if you can't do the time don't do the crime. Got no sympathy whatsoever with heroin smugglers.

Another goodbye and good riddance. Round of applause here for the Iranians.
Think National. Act Local. Oh- and superstition is just the dark matter of human history.

You are not alone in supporting and applauding a savage sentence policy Captain. If it was put to a vote here I would not bet against such a policy being accepted.
Those of us who support what we see as a more enlightened and civilized policy must take every opportunity to point out the retreat from civilisation which such a move would be.

It is possible to view Yong Vui Kong as simply a "heroin smuggler" to quote you. It is possible, but it is also simplistic.
Yong is much more than that. Yong is someones son who is hopefully loved and who loves.
Yong is a kid who by all accounts never had a chance of living anything but a short poverty stricken life. He was illiterate and is exactly the sort of economically and socially oppressed kid who drug lords entice with the prospect of escape from a hopeless situation. They are used as a courier or "mule" (what a contemptuous term).
In Ireland "victim" is a term sometimes sneered at. We prefer "survivor", But for millions of our fellow humans no other word but "victim" is adequate.
Victim of a monstrous world order. Victim of human greed. Victim of human stupidity, cruelty and most of all victim of a Capitalist system which promotes production for profit over production for need. Yong is just such a victim.

Executing him will not make the world a better or safer or less cruel place.
Applauding his death will, I wager, give a very short and nasty feel-good moment followed by the weight of a heart grown harder.

Now on the subject of pleading clemency for the bankers, that's for someone else
