Default Retail sales fall by 5.5% year on year to July 2012

RTE website for once headlining the bad news. I don't think the story has been particularly highlighted anywhere else though.
Central Statistics Office figures show the volume of sales fell by 5.5% between June 2011 and June 2012, the biggest annual drop since December 2009.
The biggest falls in volume were in food and tobacco, down 9.7% and hardware, paints and glass, down 4.8% a sector which commonly suffers in bad weather.
An increase was recorded in electrical goods, up 2.9% and books, newspapers and stationary, up 2.6%.
Alan McQuaid of Merrion Stockbrokers commented that the figures were very disappointing.
"Headline sales were down 5.5% year-on-year in volume terms, underlining the fact that consumers remain very cautious and reluctant to spend." he noted, adding "One has to go back to December 2009 for a bigger annual fall."

The outcome of current Govt policy otherwise known as internal deflation. - Not nice and a lot further to go. Long term pain for no gain.

Exactly the sort of thing ISME/IBEC/Chambers are all good at, cutting their nose off to spite face. When will they realise that depressing wages further deflates ?

That doesn't surprise me. I simply never believed that spin, anecdotally I know that people did not spend anything like they did in previous years. People have eyes in their head and can see what's going on. The spinning and lying will backfire on them to the extent that people wont believe a word of what they say about anything anymore.

Along with the fact that everyone is stoney broke these days, it's also gone out of fashion to spend money now, even people who have a bit of savings are not spending. People are like sheep when it comes to that sort of thing, they spent loads of money - often money they didn't have - during the tiger years.

Its also worth remembering that an awful lot of retailers went into sale before the last week of pre christmas shopping. Horrendous figures !

Retail sales down 3.6% year on year in March. So that's what recovery looks like.
Retail Ireland, the IBEC group that represents the retail sector, described today's figures as ''shockingly poor''.
"Every category of store recorded a fall, except department stores, specialist food stores and electrical outlets. Hardware, clothing and book sales fared particularly badly. Supermarkets, pharmacies and petrol retailers also all saw a drop in sales,''' commented Retail Ireland Director Stephen Lynam

IBEC campaigns tirelessly for cuts to pay and welfare and then expresses surprise when retail is down because people have no money to spend. What amazing talent we have in our business sector.
