RTE website for once headlining the bad news. I don't think the story has been particularly highlighted anywhere else though.
Central Statistics Office figures show the volume of sales fell by 5.5% between June 2011 and June 2012, the biggest annual drop since December 2009.http://www.rte.ie/news/2012/0727/big...-business.htmlThe biggest falls in volume were in food and tobacco, down 9.7% and hardware, paints and glass, down 4.8% a sector which commonly suffers in bad weather.
An increase was recorded in electrical goods, up 2.9% and books, newspapers and stationary, up 2.6%.
Alan McQuaid of Merrion Stockbrokers commented that the figures were very disappointing.
"Headline sales were down 5.5% year-on-year in volume terms, underlining the fact that consumers remain very cautious and reluctant to spend." he noted, adding "One has to go back to December 2009 for a bigger annual fall."
