Complicated for RTE because there was a cohort within RTE there, who were more willing than the government itself to impose the draconian Section 31 legislation.
That's part of the reason why we had to rely on British channels to produce programmes like Death on the Rock in 1988 for example, which exposed a British government shoot to kill policy, giving a lie to the official policy that they were not at war with the Provisional IRA at the time.
A lot of interviews with ex staff, I would have preferred more background. Bishop Mc Quaid was a right prick.........

Former IT editor Conor Brady completely misses the point in his opinion piece today. He seems to think the documentary should have been about Dublin print journalism as well.
Conor, it was called 'Battle Station' for a reason. The reason is that the subject was an examination of conflicts involving the national broadcaster.
If it was going to be a a documentary about conflicts involving the wider national media maybe it would have been called "Conflicts involving the national media since the early sixties paying particular attention to the Role of the Irish Times"

IF ONE were 20, 30 or even 40, what would one have learned from John Bowman’s two-part television documentary, Battle Station, broadcast last Monday and Tuesday on RTÉ One?
Pity about RTE drama.
