    Default Seaweed and sea vegetables

Had an interesting chat with a man at the weekend who sold sea veg/weeds, he maintained that this industry is the most promising sustainable resource that Ireland has, there is a large market for seaweed, being a staple of some largely populated countries and Ireland's are apparently excellent quality. Returned to Donegal the following day to the headline:

Some seaweeds are wonderful food. If we do exploit it, we need to do it sustainably, not just strip mine it.

This may be the key along with salmon farming to a sustainable industry allied to farming and most natural to Ireland in the future.

We have one major playground that other European countries in the main do not and that is that big greeny-bluey thing to the left of us as we look at the island on the map.

Properly developed (not 'exploited'!) there is a world of future in it and not only that but in the traditional unemployment blackspots along the west coast.

I'd like to see Pearse Doherty's 'Awakening the West' report from a few years back revisitied with this in mind.

Oyster Farming too is apparently a clean sustainable industry. If I get some time (children=school holidays) I'll pull out Doherty report and have a nosey.

Bottom line is though that we have delicious super foods growing off of our coast that can be cleanly and sustainably farmed to fill a gap in the Market.

I agree that our coastline could provide us with an awesome resource. I've always wondered why we never utilized such a pervasive source. I love seaweed, sushi my favorite.

The Japanese have been using seaweed for years in eating sushi. They wrap the raw fish in seaweed mats and then then eat it
They may crush the flowers, and trample every living thing but they cant stop the spring..
