Default James Larkin Society March in Liverpool Attacked by EDL-related Fascists

A small annual march of the Liverpool James Larkin Society was attacked by over 100 EDL - related "North Western Infidels" fascists and others - some bussed in.

For weeks ahead the EDL and NWI had been publicising this as an "IRA March"

    Facebook page for the march.

    Background

Over the past 7 years, this July event has been held to honour the Liverpool-born Irish Trades Unionist, Socialist and Republican, James Larkin (1876-1947). It has acted as a focus to highlight the contemporary issues and struggles of working-class people, in light of the example and inspiration left by Larkin. Each year has seen the event organised around a particular theme. Last year it was the centenary of the Liverpool General Transport Strike of 1911.

    This year the theme is:

‘Working-Class Unity against Racism and Fascism’

The reason for this is that in the past year we have witnessed a significant and disturbing rise in threats and activity by extreme right-wing and neo-Nazi groups in Liverpool, including the National Front, NWI (‘North West Infidels’), CXF (‘Combined Ex-Forces’), BNP and EDL. Their activities have included:

    1. Harassment of the public sector strike day march inLiverpoolin November 2011
    2. An attack on an Irish community parade in February 2012
    3. Threats against the Occupy Liverpool Camp protesters
    4. Attempts to attack the UNITE Liverpool Trades Union office
    5. Repeated attacks on the News From Nowhere progressive bookshop
    6. Personal threats against prominent local Trades Unionists
    7. Four Far Right candidates stood in the Liverpool Mayoral Elections in May. Their total vote was minimal, but they used the opportunity to spread their message of race hate
    8. Verbal abuse and physical threats against PCS Union members on picket-line duty in Bootle during the public sector strike day on 10th May.

The march and rally on 21st July was an opportunity for trades unionists, members of all of Liverpool’s diverse communities, and all progressive groups to unite in opposition against the threat from these racist and fascist groups.
Does anyone know what if any political parties the group is related to?

    Good photos via the link.

This one is of "Combined ex Forces - CxF" members. Fascist groups historically have the same close and overlapping relationships with police and army as northern Protestant paramilitary groups.

Their role is to physically attack trade unions and the left, to stir up sectarian divisions to weaken left opposition, and to create provocations to justify police clamp down on rights to protest and organise.

Great football team. [yeah, i'm a fan]

Sad to see the growth of this far right element in the city and surrounding area. Probably not such a large element but as you see they can soon bus in a mob and that occurs around England on a weekly basis. Thugs the lot of them.

A power base for these far right groups is a forum called ''Storm front'' Was keeping tabs on commentary surrounding the burning of Polish flags in Belfast. http://www.stormfront.org/forum/t901179/

Yeah, i'd say you're not far wrong. During the 1980's the National Front encouraged many unemployed working class men to join the British Army.

All part of Nick Griffins master plan.

None of the yobs seem to realise that Larkin had no connection whatever with the IRA.

You'll find your answers in the banners and flags at this parade.

    Their ignorance knows no boundaries.

Liverpool anti fascists are reporting on the police failing to clear back the fascists from the scene

Yesterday saw the annual James Larkin Society march and rally in Liverpool, under the banner of “Working Class Unity Against Racism and Fascism.” The theme was chosen in defiance of rising far-right activity in the city, most notably a mobilisation in February where 200 fascists, loyalists and ex-soldiers were able to turn an Irish Republican march away from the City Centre. This time, the march was not turned back – but by the same token neither were the fascists convincingly repelled.
