Default Blind People Demand Correct Iarnrod Eireann Announcements - Text Campaign Today

Today is the day of a text campaign to IE to improve their diabolically poor audio announcments. Blind people at the moment are depending on fellow passengers (who can at times be messers) to tell them when to get off trains.

After this, perhaps a campaign to get buses to put the correct destinations up?

Do you think that people with a vision impairment ? should be able to travel safely on Irish Rail Services with independence and dignity?
Do you think that our tourists should not be confused by audio announcements which are misleading and or incorrect?

If you answered yes to these questions then we are calling on you to send a text at Exactly 09:30 on the morning of Monday 23rd July.

    Please send the texts to

Barry Kenny (Manager of Corporate Communications, Iarnród Éireann) 0872381224
Jane Cregan (Corporate Communications Executive, Iarnród Éireann) 0868531098

Please choose one of the below texts to send.

if you are a person without a vision impairment including TDs and senators please send the following suggested text

“Hello my name is [enter your name here], I am supporting the campaign by persons with vision impairment. I am contacting you to highlight the lack of audible announcements on both dart and intercity rail services. I would also like to point out that audible announcements are of a grate value to our tourist industry. I would be most grateful if you could give me an exact date and time when this problem will be resolved. I would like to hear from you as soon as possible.”

There is growing anger among blind and vision impaired people at the ongoing failure to install and use audible announcements on Iarnród Éireann DART, intercity and commuter trains, according to VISPA (Vision Impaired Service Providers Alliance), an alliance of Irish sight loss organisations.

Audible announcements tell passengers what station they are approaching and make it easier for people who are blind or vision impaired to travel independently. A group of blind and vision impaired people have now had enough of the ongoing delays in ensuring the availability of audible announcements and have initiated a campaign to blitz Iarnród Éireann with text messages on Monday 23rd July.

VISPA conducted a survey into audible announcements in 2011, which detailed a rather disappointing picture of non-compliance and inconsistency in respect of audible announcements made both within trains and on specific stations as recorded from 93 train journeys.
69% of announcements on trains were not deemed to be audible to the researcher(s) and of 38 announcements, 67.8% were found to have been correct, a likely cause for concern with regards to 32.1% of instances where information was incorrect.
The researcher(s) indicated that on 42 occasions (76.2%), there was no announcement made on specific train journeys. In 8 instances the announcement could either not be heard or/and understood. 9% of announcements were made by a driver that was not related to destinations

It is a sad reflection on Irish citizens that they cannot be depended on to help out a blind fellow-passenger.

Even sadder when the national rail company can't be bothered to provide correct announcements. Everyone needs them, not only people who are blind.

Why can't the driver or guard do it ? That always used to work.

"Always"? Surely train drivers did not leave their footplates and walk down the platforms announcing the station.

The local station staff did just that once upon a time.

That's different and that could still be done or platform speakers could be used.

    Intercom system...

"The train is now coming in to xxx station"

There used to be a guy on one of the lines out of Heuston who had a rather odd zombie-like delivery. On one occasion one of us started to laugh and the laughter just took off down the train until many were in pain with it and then we could hear that the poor man could hear us but couldn't work out what the problem was...

Those proposed texts are awfully long. It would take me a good half hour to type one out on my phone.

You have a point. Perhaps just a text saying "I support the campaign for accurate audio announcements on trains" would do?

    Or a voice message ?

"Der nächst Halt ist Aue." if spoken with the right Saxon accent will bring a laugh from modern teenagers.
To get truly frustrated, try booking a ticket on the German Railway site using a Saxon accent.

I have texted both those phone numbers with "Sort out your announcements CIE!"

I got back an instant reply with an apology for audio problems, plus the URL for a blog explaining what they are doing about it.

This sort of thing is really confined to "Freistaat Sachsen" . the other Ossis are quite easy to understand. Certainly compared to some of the awful crap you hear in Bayern or Baden-Württenburg
